Katrina Williams

A DARK PATH

Series: Katrina Williams #3

by Robert E. Dunn

Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Pub Date: 8/7/2018

Sheriff's detective Katrina “Hurricane” Williams confronts deep-rooted hate and greed in the Missouri Ozarks in this riveting police procedural…
What at first appears to be a brush fire in some undeveloped bottom land yields the charred remains of a young African-American man. As sheriff’s Katrina Williams conducts her in-spection of the crime scene, she discovers broken headstones and disturbed open graves in a forgotten cemetery.
As Katrina attempts to sort out a complex backwoods criminal network involving the Aryan Brotherhood, meth dealers, and the Ozarks Nightriders motorcycle gang, she is confronted by the sudden appearance of a person out of her own past who may be involved. And what seems like a clear-cut case of racially motivated murder is further complicated by rumors of hidden silver and dark family histories. To uncover the ugly truth, Katrina will need to dig up past crimes and shameful secrets that certain people would kill to keep buried . . .

A PARTICULAR DARKNESS
Katrina Williams Book 2
Pub Date: 9/12/2017

From the author of A Living Grave comes a gripping police procedural featuring sheriff's detective Katrina Williams as she exposes the dark underbelly of Appalachia . . .

Dredging up the Truth

Still recovering from tragedy and grieving a devastating loss, Iraq war veteran and sheriff's detective Katrina Williams copes the only way she knows how—by immersing herself in work. A body's just been pulled from the lake with a fish haul, but what seems like a straight-forward murder case over the poaching of paddlefish for domestic caviar quickly becomes murkier than the depths of the lake.

Soon a second body is found—an illegal Peruvian refugee woman linked to a charismatic tent revival preacher. But as Katrina tries to investigate the enigmatic evangelist, she is blocked by antagonistic FBI agents and Army CID personnel. When more young female refu-gees disappear, she must partner with deputy Billy Blevins, who stirs mixed feelings in her, to connect the lake murder to the refugees. Katrina is no stranger to darkness, but cold-blooded conspirators plan to make sure she'll never again see the light of day . . .

A LIVING GRAVE
Katrina Williams Book 1

The first in a gritty new series featuring sheriff’s detective Katrina Williams, as she investigates moonshine, murder, and the ghosts of her own past…

BODY OF PROOF
Katrina Williams left the Army ten years ago disillusioned and damaged. Now a sheriff’s detective at home in the Missouri Ozarks, Katrina is living her life one case at a time—between mandated therapy sessions—until she learns that she’s a suspect in a military investigation with ties to her painful past.

The disappearance of a local girl is far from the routine distraction, however. Brutally murdered, the girl’s corpse is found by a bottlegger whose information leads Katrina into a tangled web of teenagers, moonshiners, motorcycle clubs, and a fellow veteran battling illness and his own personal demons. Unraveling each thread will take time  Katrina might not have as the Army investigator turns his searchlight on the devastating incident that ended her military career. Now Katrina will need to dig deep for the truth—before she’s found buried…

Robert E. Dunn was born an Army brat and grew up in the Missouri Ozarks. He wrote his first book at age eleven turning a series of Jack Kirby comic books into a hand written novel.
Over many years in the, mostly, honest work of video and film production he produced everything from documentaries, to training films and his favorite, travelogues. He returned to writing mystery, horror, and fantasy fiction for publication after the turn of the century. It seemed like a good time for change even if the changes were not always his choice.
Mr. Dunn is the author of the horror novels, THE RED HIGHWAY, MOTORMAN, and THE HARROWING, as well as the Katrina Williams mystery/thriller series, A LIVING GRAVE, A PARTICULAR DARKNESS, and the upcoming A DARK PATH.

Wondrous World of Witchcraft and Misery

Have you ever tried to conjure up the perfect man?

It’s not as easy as it might seem, even if you are a powerful and intelligent witch.

Genre: Fantasy

Release Date: 5 December 2017

Publisher: Silverwood Books

Petulia and Miss Level find out that there is more to finding Mr Right than just a flick of the wand, and poof…there he is! Their latest attempt is gorgeous – as long as you don’t mind the horns and the singing, which of course they do.
But when they try to fix him they run into some serious problems.

To make things even more complicated, a mysterious and handsome stranger appears. But there is something not quite right about him either…
Will Petulia and Miss Level be able to fix everything and can they use their witchcraft to overcome misery?

A muffled conversation between Petulia and Miss Level was a distraction for all the people in the audience, but they didn’t care. They were talking about important things. Like the weather. For some people this might have been a good indication of how badly the actors were performing. I mean, if the weather appeared to be more tantalising than the arts, there could only be something wrong with the arts. Unless the weather was actually extraordinary. I can understand that a hurricane would be very interesting, but the question is: who would go to the theatre in a hurricane?
Clearly Petulia and Miss Level. It makes you wonder if there actually were people around for them to distract. In any case, a performance during a hurricane has a valid reason for being below average. The actors were probably wondering how long the roof would hold up, and they had to shout to be heard over the howling wind.
When one of them finally noticed that the two audience members weren’t even paying attention, he signalled to his colleagues and one by one they left the stage to find safety in the basement of the theatre.
The last one shouted, “Switch off the lights before you leave,” which made Petulia raise her hand in affirmative response.
And then they were alone.
“Finally! It took them long enough.” Petulia grabbed her canvas bag from the seat next to her and stood up.
“Well, you know how daft actors are.” Miss Level waited for Petulia to squeeze past her between the rows of chairs, then picked up her own bag and followed. Instead of going to the exit, they crossed the room and walked up to the stage. Petulia fished a piece of chalk out of her bag and started to draw a pentagram on the floor of the stage. “It’s almost ten o’clock. We’ll never get this done in time.” Three points were already drawn.
“Nonsense. We’ve got all the time in the world.” Miss Level stopped at the first point and put a bowl filled with herbs on the tip. She rummaged through her bag again and found another bowl for the next tip and so on. When the entire thing was drawn and supplied with the right herbs at the right points, Petulia put her hand in her bag again and found two boxes of matches. She threw one to Miss Level on the other side of the pentagram, who, by some miracle, caught it perfectly. Then she checked her watch: 9:59. She glanced up.
“Are you ready?”
Miss Level had a match in her hand, ready to light it on the box. “Ready.”
Petulia kept her eyes on her watch while pulling a match out of her own box. “Now!”
Both women lit their matches, waited a full second with their eyes closed and then blew them out. At the same time as the flames died, the herbs in the bowls caught fire. The women spread their arms and started chanting indiscernible words. The smoke began to whirl around between them, creating a sort of vortex. This went on for ten minutes. Just when Petulia was about to ask if they were doing it right, a shadow appeared in the smoke. First it seemed like the smoke just got darker, heavier. But then it started to dissipate and they could clearly make out the form of a man. The smoke cleared completely and the chanting stopped.
Petulia put her hands on her hips. “Damn it. We did something wrong.”
Miss Level, who had a clear view of the man’s naked backside and was very distracted by it, asked, “What?”
“He’s not supposed to have horns.”
Miss Level’s eyes slowly roamed up the man’s body until she could see the unmistakable horns. She grinned. “Well, at least he doesn’t have a tail this time.”

Weirdly absurd. Magical....fantasy? You can't call it realism.  Witches and God?  How to review this without giving anything away!
The characters are funny and endearing. I loved the dog. And the Big little book of Dale.
Do not snack while reading this book.
Offbeat. With hilarious moments. Parts will remind you of other things yet you won't be quite sure what.  Definitely escapism reading. I can not compare it to anything else I have ever read.

Magick Run Amok

Magick Run Amok
An Abracadabra Mystery Book 3
by Sharon Pape
Genre: Cozy Paranormal Mystery
The answer to whodunit may lie beyond the veil . . .

November in upstate New York can be chilly, but Kailyn Wilde’s shop, Abracadabra, is a cozy respite where you can find lotions, potions, and plenty of warm, feline company. But what customers don’t know is that the proprietor has some unusual powers—and unusual friends, including the renowned magician Merlin, who’s been transported into the modern world. All of which comes in handy when there’s a murder to be solved . . .
Investigative journalist Ryan Cutler has perished in a car accident in New Camel, and his friend, Travis, suspects foul play—especially when the reporter’s notes reveal a mysterious list of dead men’s names. Kailyn wants to help, but she’s also got her hands full with the curmudgeonly Merlin, who’s not exactly maintaining a low profile. Between keeping the wizard under wraps and mixing up cold remedies that work like magic, she’ll have to tap into her many talents to figure out a killer’s fatal formula . . .
A charming, must-read mystery with enchanting characters. A fun and entertaining page turner.”—Rose Pressey, USA Today bestselling author

Magic and murder mix in many ways as Kailyn Wilde tries to help her dear friend Travis discover what happened to his distant and mysterious friend. Ryan was a reporter who had a nose for obscure cases to chase, didn't mind ruffling feathers and sticking his nose into dangerous places.

Kailyn and her aunt Tilly have some unusual talents, which they seem not to have yet mastered. Determined to stay clearly on the white side of anything magical, this time the lines are more blurred and graying. Very few people know about their "talents" but it is becoming more difficult to hide them. Especially when their guest, Merlin, continues to act on his impulses, drawing attention to himself and his ideas.

Tourists are the name of the game when running a retail business, so strangers are always popping in. Kailyn must be cautious when mixing up special spells and potions and when asking questions.
She is also working on her own version of "popping in" skills.

With humor and investigative daring, along with some other worldly intervention, this adventure is a welcome addition to a delightful series. You can never predict what will happen next or who will save the day!

That Olde White Magick
An Abracadabra Mystery Book 2

It’s time to work her crime-solving magic again . . .

Kailyn Wilde enjoys running her shop, Abracadabra, in the quaint New York hamlet of New Camel, where she lives with her six cats. Her family’s been here for centuries, and she’d like to keep up the tradition. But the place may never be the same if a big hotel gets built, so she does her civic duty and attends a town meeting along with her aunt Tilly . . . and Merlin. Yes, that Merlin—though he gets introduced to folks as her “distant English cousin.” The wizard is pretty grumpy about being transported here, but there are things about the modern world he doesn’t mind—like pizza.

Kailyn was prepared for a heated debate about the hotel, but she wasn’t expecting murder. When Tilly finds the body of a board member outside the schoolhouse, Kailyn doesn’t want any suspicion cast on the wrong person. She plans to crack this case, even if she has to talk to every living soul in town—plus a few departed ones . . .

Pape has a sure handed balance of humor and action.” —Julie Hyzy, New York Timesbestselling author

New development is coming to town and the townspeople are split about the profitable benefits versus the damage to their way of life.
Sorceress Kailyn Wilde is also a bit of a snoop. Having successfully discovered a killer before, she can't keep her nose out of the investigation. It doesn't hurt that shegets to spend tie with a handsome newspaper writer.
With a meddling Merlin, who is still discovering new things about the times in which we live and he appeared, and advice offering deceased relatives, Kailyn is trying to balance work and advancing her witchy skills. This is a fun series with plenty of suspects and plot twists.

Magick & Mayhem
An Abracadabra Mystery Book 1

What’s in a murderer’s bag of tricks?

Twenty-something Kailyn Wilde has learned to embrace her unpredictable life as a descendant of small-town New Camel’s most magickal family. She just didn’t expect to inherit her mother and grandmother’s centuries-old shop, Abracadabra, so suddenly. The surprises keep coming when Kailyn goes to finalize the estate at the local attorney’s office—and stumbles over the body of her best friend Elise’s husband . . .

As a brash detective casts the blame on Elise, Kailyn summons her deepest powers to find answers and start an investigation of her own. What with running a business, perfecting ancient spells, and keeping up with an uninvited guest of fabled origins, Kailyn has her hands full. But with the help of her uncanny black cat Sashkatu and her muumuu-clad Aunt Tilly, she’s closing in on a killer—who will do anything to make sure she never tests her supernatural skills again!

This series combines so many wonderful, magical things I love to read about. It is a true cozy in every sense. Plus we have a light bit of time travel, a plethora of cats, no, one can never have too many cats...
It has the much loved small town flavor with requisite gossip and feuds plus plenty of suspects with believable motives. I didn't want to leave New Camel and am looking forward to my return visit.

BEAR WITNESS TO MURDER

Bear Witness to Murder (A Teddy Bear Mystery) by Meg Macy

About the Book

Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series
Kensington (May 29, 2018)
Paperback: 288 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496709653
Digital ASIN: B075C38DMD

As autumn air settles into the quaint small town of Silver Hollow, there’s nothing more popular than Sasha’s teddy bears—and murder in cold blood . . .
Silver Bear Shop and Factory manager Sasha Silverman is cozying up to the fall season by hosting Silver Hollow’s Cranbeary Tea Party, the opening event of the village’s Oktobear Fest—a too-cute celebration themed around teddy bears. She barely has a moment to agonize over the return of her former high school rival, Holly Parker, whose new toy and bookstore in town could spell big trouble for the Silver Bear Shop and her cousin’s small bookstore . . .
But when Sasha discovers Holly’s shop assistant dead with a knife plunged in her body, the unpleasant woman suddenly looks like a real backstabber. So does Sasha’s ex-husband, rumored to have rekindled the fiery extramarital affair he once had with the victim. Now, before a gruesome homicide case takes the fun out of both the Fest and her personal life, Sasha must identify the true culprit from a daunting suspect list—or risk becoming as lifeless as one of her stuffed bears . . .

I read and enjoyed the first book in this series and do recommend you read it as well. I think you may get more from this book if you have read Bearly Departed  but Bear Witness can be read as a stand alone.
Autumn has arrived along with more bear themed celebrations.  Being a midwestern girl myself I love the Michigan setting. I am also a huge fan of themed festivals and those in cozy mysteries give us the very best and more.  I can't wait to add a few suggestions to my own decorations this year.
So, I love the setting and the themes and the characters! Sasha and her family have their quirks and arguments but also have each others' backs. Something is up with her mother this time!  I understand she wants to see her girls settled and happy, and perhaps providing some grandchildren, but to wish Sasha back with a conniving, low-life, cheating ex! Mother, please!
Lots of dating drama and a healthy dose of friendly competition while decorating oversize art bears for the village. Less friendly competition between shop keepers.
I was riveted and worried and really did not see THIS ending happening.
I am looking forward to see where the series goes and new things coming to Silver Hollow and the Silverman family.

For the Love of a Centaur: Centaur Agency Book 1 by A.S. McGowan

For the Love of a Centaur
Centaur Agency Book 1
by A.S. McGowan
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Analise woke up in the hospital to find that her parents were dead. Her father’s business partner has inherited the ranch she grew up on. To make matters worse her father’s will stipulates she cannot receive her inheritance until she turns twenty-one. Now penniless and homeless, she agrees to a marriage of convenience with her father’s business partner.

After turning twenty-one and with her inheritance in hand, she no longer wishes to be trapped in a loveless marriage. Moving out she builds a life for herself away from the ranch and her husband. When her husband shows up on her door step asking to give their marriage a chance, she jumps at the idea of a marriage of love. The problem is: everyone has been lying to her, her whole life. Now those lies may very well get her killed.

**On Sale for .99 cents 5/1 – 5/8!!**

Like our protagonist, Analise, I felt a little disoriented as the book began. She had been through a trauma. I was just being exposed to and learning about her situation. She had had a short lifetime, eighteen years, with her parents and now they are gone. As the book progresses we learn there were many secrets about their life she never discovered.

The man beside her in the hospital was her father's business partner. I was never quite sure of his age. Younger than her father but older than Alalise. A man she has had girlish crush on for years.
Now she finds herself in a marriage of convenience to him. She believes it is for financial reasons but is willing to make the best of it. For him, it is to keep her safe and being close to her is not an option he is willing to entertain. They move forward this way until Analiese turns twenty-one and comes into her inheritance.

Having been young and protected her entire life, living more than less in isolation, she is naive yet has an innate strength she uses to find her own way, and her own friends, when she moves out into the world. Her sense of betrayal stays with her and when she once again sees her "husband" under dubious circumstances, she is in emotional turmoil.

From the title and description we know this is a love story, but from "centaur" I wasn't sure what to expect. A shifter or a secret agent? The early secrets led me more towards the spy aspect.
The dangerous situation near the end of the book leave no doubt.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series to learn more about a mysterious assassin.

The Ghosts of a Centaur
Centaur Agency Book 2

Stella left one life behind for another. Finding happiness in a new world, Stella never thought anything could destroy her new life. Until a package arrived containing a severed head. The threat was clear and the stakes were high. Leaving her new life behind, Stella hoped her choice would protect her loved ones.

Now twelve years later, someone had discovered Stella’s identity. People she loves are starting to die at the hands of a very cold and calculated killer. Forced out of hiding, Stella moves fast to protect her family. Can the Centaur Agency discover the identity of the killer in time? Or will Stella lose everyone she has ever loved?

**On Sale for .99 cents 5/1 – 5/8!!**
The danger comes closer to home as a video disc shows without a doubt the agents are being targeted.  With the birth of a child, Analiese and Matt become more vulnerable. Stella's identity is revealed, along with past secrets, and her ties and emotions are put to the test. We learn about leaks in Centaur itself and while this book has it happier moments,  is the series really headed to a darker place?!!?

The Making of a Centaur
Centaur Agency Book 3

Severely beaten, "Lucky" wakes up with no memory of who she is or where she came from. Rescued by the Centaur Agency, she sets out to discover her identity. Plagued by violent flashbacks, she finds herself afraid of the men around her.

There is one man though that makes her feel safe. However time is running out for all of them. Will "Lucky" get her memories back in time to stop a madman? Or will her past catch up with her, leaving the most important person in her life to pay the price?

I am a wife and mother, who lives in a small Southeast Missouri town. I am the author of the Centaur Agency series. Currently I am working on book 3 in the series The Making of a Centaur which will publish in July 2017. I also have plans for a vampire trilogy that I am working on. I will be publishing the trilogy after I finish the 4 book Centaur Agency series. From there I also am working on a Werewolf series. So much planned with a little bit for everyone.
