Or maybe you're just feeling "blah" about your job and want to bring some life back into your workplace. In today’s tech savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

When it’s time to write a draft of my book, I’ve actually switched to dictating it into my iPad. I like to stand and pace a bit while I write, so I put the iPad on a music stand. This is great for me because:

·       I don’t feel like my butt is expanding while I sit on it for hours at a time!
·       I can avoid wrist and hand pain from rapid typing, since I’ve battled carpal tunnel and other wrist problems in the past.
·       My words can keep up with my thoughts! Sometimes the ideas are flowing so quickly that writing by hand or typing just doesn’t cut it.

I have, however, started to write outlines of my books via pen and paper. This is how Joy to You and Me (At Work!) was born. I had been walking my dogs one summer evening and was thinking about what kind of non-fiction book I could write. I realized that people were always sad to see me leave a job because of the unique ways I had brought joy to each workplace. I thought, “Hey, there’s a book idea!” I couldn’t get home fast enough as an outline was already leaping to mind.

Since it was a beautiful evening, I sat on my front porch swing with a notebook and just let the ideas flow. The pages were a disaster – I definitely didn’t keep my scribbles on the lines! But I believe that pen and paper make the whole “stream of consciousness” creation process better. While no one else could possibly interpret these outlines, they become crystal-clear to me when it’s time to write the actual book.

Every author has to do whatever feels appropriate for him or her. I hope the “pen and paper” method never truly dies out!
