Catala had been raised in Sevilla, Spain. Her father’s family were merchants and sold tobacco, affording her a privileged upbringing. They lived in a beautiful villa in the middle of town with the finest furniture and paintings.
Her favorite memory was when she went dancing at the Feria de Abril, Spain’s most colorful festival. It consisted of flamenco dancing, bullfighting, horseback riding, and carnival games. She loved to tell Elena about the beautiful polka-dotted flamenco dresses that were so elaborate and festive.
Catala’s father had allowed her to attend the University of Salamanca because he saw that Catala had an interest in learning, and she received her degree in the fine arts. He wanted the best for his only child and encouraged his daughter’s independence.
She broke his heart when she married Miguel, whom she met at the university. He never did accept Miguel and died a short while later. Miguel, with his golden-brown curls and amber eyes, intrigued her, and when he would tell her about his love for Puerto Rico, she fell in love with him even more.
Miguel spent his summers at home, swimming in the beautiful tropical waters and helping his father work on the plantation, trying to keep them financially afloat. During his last year at the university he received a telegram from his mother informing him that his father had fallen ill. By the time he made it home, his father had already passed away. Miguel knew it was from a broken heart—his father always wanted to return to España and be close to his family, but that was not to be. The following year Miguel’s beloved mother died.
He married Catala and they came to the island to try to salvage what they could, but they could barely make a living. Still, even with the very few luxuries they had left, Catala made sure to keep a clean house and teach proper etiquette to Elena. She saw despair everywhere and she wanted her daughter to remember her ties to Spain, and that she was more than their circumstances depicted.
