Fire's Love by Alex E. Carey

Kira thought she was leaving her demons behind when she left for college. She quickly discovers demons are everywhere, and can be good or evil. Not only are they real, but they’re protecting her; that is, except for the ones who want her dead.

Kira's parents want to reveal things about who she is, but a strange phenomenon prevents them from explaining. Before they can try again, her mother and brother die and her father disappears. Afterward, Kira finds a mysterious book in her parents‘ belongings. Although the book confuses her, it comforts her too. She's sure it holds the answers she seeks.

One of Kira’s new friends, Lowell Hew, is also an earth demon named Ulric the Wolf Thief. Lowell tries to help Kira solve the mysteries involving the book, her parents, and the elements they wanted her to know. Although Lowell has a crush on Kira, he’s not looking for a relationship, or so he keeps telling himself.

Meanwhile, Lowell introduces Kira to his best friend, Pyre, a fire demon with a fiery temperament and a troubled past. Pyre closed off his heart years ago, while deep inside he yearned to belong. For Pyre, learning to love again comes with tremendous risk, especially when the girl he loves is human, and his best friend has thoughts of his own.

Things go well until an eerie presence threatens Kira and her new friends, and they can only speculate as to who it may be. While her friends protect her and try to uncover the enemy’s identity, Kira must adjust to the challenges of being human with demon friends. Will she bask in the warmth, or be consumed by the flames of Fire’s Love?

Kira Phoenix knows she is different. She has already survived childhood trauma and even looks younger than the typical teenager. So heading off to college at age sixteen she isn't assured of making friends easily. Her new boy crazy roommate doesn't seem to have anything in common with Kira.

When she is fortunate to discover a connection, and a complementary class schedule, with the only other sixteen year old freshman, Kira thinks she might survive these angst filled changes. She has no idea how different she and her new friends are or what dangers await them.

Suitable for high school age readers and above, this fantasy includes a bit of mythology based fantasy, shape shifting protagonists that are trying to fit in and discover their way the same as human teens, envy and jealousy and other bossy human traits we all must survive as we enter adult responsibilities.

For a first in series book this offers promise of interesting reading to come and characters we grow to care about. I accepted this book to voluntarily read and review.

I majored in English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Kira’s story came to me during my first year while waiting for class to start. I began to scribble and the next thing I knew I had the beginnings of a story. I continued to imagine what would happen next and wrote bits and pieces in between classes and during work breaks. Once I typed up all the notes, I realized I had enough for a full novel, and ideas for more, resulting in the Elemental Series.

I enjoy a variety of books, but especially enjoyed the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling and the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. If you also like those book series, I hope you will enjoy my Elemental Series.

One thing I am asked constantly about this series is if Satan or demon worship is involved. There is absolutely nothing like that in the books. In my books, demons are more like humans with special gifts or powers. They can be good or evil. Some of the demons hate humans, while others protect humans and the earth. It could be compared to the concepts behind books or entertainment involving vampires, witches, or mutants as defenders of mankind. It symbolizes ideologies and behaviors that we sometimes struggle with in the world today, and challenges the view of judging or hating a group of people simply because of something that identifies them, whether it's their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socio-economics, etc. I, myself, am a Christian who believes in tolerance and acceptance, and that hate only breeds more hate. My books are family friendly for all age groups. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
