What started out as the worst day of Mac Faraday’s life would end up being a new beginning. After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this lawyer wore the expression of a child bursting to tell his secret. This confidence would reveal Mac as heir to undreamed of fortunes, and lead him to the birthplace of America’s Queen of Mystery and an investigation that will unfold like one of her famous mystery novels.

Soon after she moves to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive community is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself “Pay Back” begins stalking her. When Katrina is found strangled all evidence points to her terrorist, who is nowhere to be found.

Three months later, the file on her murder is still open when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother’s home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother’s journal, this retired cop puts all his detective skills to work to pick up where the local investigators have left off to follow the clues to Katrina’s executer.

The book that began it all! I have read and listened to other books and spin-offs in this series so I was excited to get back to where and how it all began. By now I know a few of the secrets and am fond of the main characters. Audio book narrator Mike Alger does a fantastic job of distinguishing voices. It is a joy to listen to him. I tend to sit in the car after I have arrived at my destination just to listen a bit longer.
Homicide detective Mac Faraday is about to have his world knocked off its axis. He just went through a messy divorce and was ready to file for bankruptcy. He knew he was adopted, but was unprepared to discover who his birth mother was. He is about to find out almost more than he can handle.
Oh - and I might mention he inherits a fortune and a community. What a community!

That does not change Mac's natural inclination to solve mysteries, specifically murder. Along with discovering his heritage, he is determined to solve a cold case in which his newly acquired half brother is a targeted suspect.

I had to laugh when everyone is calling Mac Mick, and there are times when he slips up and can't keep his own name straight. Of course Gnarly is also a source of entertainment. I appreciated getting to know more about his background.

An intense crime novel with lighter moments and a nice pace to keep readers on their toes.
Once you discover this series you have to continue and will become attached to the players. This series has something for everyone.

GUNS, DRUGS, OR WEALTH: THE THREE-INCOME SECRET TO SUCCESS by Jerry Ford

GUNS, DRUGS, OR WEALTH: THE THREE-INCOME SECRET TO SUCCESS THAT TOOK ME FROM THE STREETS OF DETROIT TO THE TOP OF MY GAME

Inside the Book

TitleGUNSDRUGS, OR WEALTH: THE THREE-INCOME SECRET TO SUCCESS THAT TOOK ME FROM THE STREETS OF DETROIT TO THE TOP OF MY GAME

Author: Jerry Ford
Publisher: Beast Publications
Pages: 164
Genre: Nonfiction/Motivational
BOOK BLURB:
Author and Celebrity Personal Trainer Jerry Ford has authored a powerful, painfully honest book entitled GUNSDRUGS, OR WEALTH as a help and inspiration to others who also seek personal wealth and independence.
Said Jerry Ford: “ ‘GunsDrugs, or Wealth’ is about how I went from the hard streets of Detroit to building wealth through stocks, real estate and smart spending. I share with my readers how I began to build my wealth as a personal trainer. As I wrote this book, I imagined myself having a front porch casual conversation with my readers. This how-to guide on building wealth will not only teach people how to build wealth, but it’s written in layman’s terms. The genres of this book are business, inspiration, and self-help.”
Mr. Ford’s book tells all that he has learned, offering readers specific, tried-and-true tools for building wealth by creating three streams of income: (1) passive income (through real-estate investing), (2) portfolio income (through stock market investing), and (3) earned income (through hard work and smart spending).
As a personal trainer, Jerry Ford has worked with many, many “big name” clients, including rapper Big Sean to musical artist MoBeatz. One special trip led to Ford becoming an author. “I was traveling with Big Sean and MoBeatz and decided to journal a few hours a day on the trip. A few hours turned into many…and two months later I had created the manuscript for my book.”
A tragedy earlier in his life also drove Jerry to pull himself up from a hard life in his native Detroit and build a life for himself as a personal wealth coach and trainer. “My brother Sam was murdered…I miss him every day. He inspires me to get out of bed and go as hard as possible in life every day…I feel like I am living for two people instead of just one, myself.”
“Being an author was never a plan,” asserted Jerry. “I knew I needed to figure out a way to help the eighty percent of America who are poor or middle class. I knew that I needed to help the three billion people on the planet who are really poor. Of course this book doesn’t make up for the world’s educational flaws, but it’s a start. Schools don’t teach people how to build wealth.”
Praise for Jerry Ford and His Method
“Jerry traveled across the globe to train me. He goes hard in fitness and in life!”
Alisha Boe, actress best known for 13 Reasons Why on Netflix
“I am inspired by Jerry’s principles of building wealth through real estate and stock market investments as well as entrepreneurship. With multiple streams of income, the sky is the limit when it comes to potential earning power. This book is here to help!”
Adrienne C. Moore, actress best known for Orange Is the New Black on Netflix
“Jerry is a beast, and I can totally understand why. Coming from our city, it’s life or death.”
Dj Mo Beatz, best known as Big Sean’s official DJ
“Jerry is not only a trainer; he’s an entrepreneur. He has come up with incredibly creative ways to service his high-end clientele. Not only do I enjoy working with Jerry–he’s great to hang out with.”

Jerry Ford is a self made businessman. His story is an interesting one. Partially it began as being in the right place at the right time, after coming from a less right place. Much of it comes from his personal drive and personality/temperament. His unwillingness to settle. His determination to experience and accumulate the best life has to offer. He also understands that good things come to those who are willing to sacrifice and work for their dreams.
In this autobiographical recounting, Jerry tells it like it is. He admits that before he knew better, he made mistakes. He learned from those mistakes. He wants to help others learn without making the same mistakes. He shares that it is never too late or too soon to begin working towards what your heart desires, especially if your desire is wealth accumulation.

First - understand what wealth is. That will take you far towards opening yourself to receiving and accumulating it.  Then - actively work and make the best choices you can. Knowing means nothing if you do not take action.  Jerry Ford offers some clear advice on how to play "the game."
There is a chapter near the end of the book directed specifically at readers of one particular race. I think it has valid points for each of us, regardless of age, gender, race, background or other factors. This particular chapter is his own opinion. Be open enough to read it before you form your opinions.
I wish he had included a suggested reading as a resource. I appreciate and admire his advice to read at least one book per week to increase your education and hone your focus, keep you on track.
Jerry gives some good general advice about diversifying and maintaining multiple streams of passive income. I believe younger readers can relate to his point of view and could learn from this book.

Jerry Ford is a Detroit native who grew up in the ghetto. He has been involved in and witnessed everything from gun violence to drug trafficking and addiction, jail, gang life, and murder. At age fourteen, Jerry’s brother, Sam, was murdered on their mother’s birthday. At age seventeen, Jerry’s best friend, Steven, was also murdered. The list goes on. One of the ways Jerry channeled his anger was through martial arts; he became a black belt in multiple styles and received gold medals in the Junior Olympics and other world-respected tournaments.
Jerry received his Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University. Immediately after college, he started his career as a personal-fitness trainer at New York Health & Racquet Clubs, and soon became one of the company’s top trainers. Having established himself as a fitness professional in New York City, Jerry moved Los Angeles, where he became a top trainer at Equinox. After mastering the science of human engineering, Jerry parted ways with Equinox to launch his own private training business. His clients currently include high-net-worth individuals, celebrities, royal family members, fighters, and a variety of other tastemakers. While still based in Los Angeles, he travels nationally and internationally to train clients.
Jerry is also an investor in stocks, real estate, television and film properties, and anything else he believes to be worth the risk. This is his first book, and he wrote it to help others walk their own paths to success.

Can a broken engagement ignite the spark of true love?

Sylvia Dowder had almost made it to the altar when her fiancĂ© unexpectedly became a viscount, and dropped her like a stale crumpet to make a more “suitable” match. Though Sylvia’s heart has been crushed, her spirit has not. She puts her wits and social savvy to use as a secret gossip columnist—and as the Everton Domestic Society’s party planner to the ton. Luckily, she’s not in danger of ever falling for an aristocrat again…

Especially not one like Anthony Braighton, Earl of Grafton. Raised in America, Anthony sees no reason to marry when he can enjoy all the perks of being an eligible earl. Determined to convince his family he doesn’t need a wife, he hires Sylvia to act as hostess and decorator for upcoming parties. Yet Sylvia is as adept at captivating his interest as she is at beautifying his home. And despite this Everton lady’s aversion to titled men, some attractions can’t be denied—and love rarely does go where it’s told . . .

______________________

Late again, Sylvia Dowder ran down the stairs at the Everton Domestic Society as if her skirts were on fire. It was impossible to read her handwritten pages while moving at such a pace, but she needed to send her article to the Weekly Whisper’s editor before the day was out. She’d been late last month and nearly lost her post at the newspaper.
At the bottom of the stairs, she noted her failure to sign the article. Quill in hand, she dripped ink on her brown skirt, leaned on the banister and scribbled Mable Tattler at the bottom. She would ask Gray to have  a footman carry it to Free Market Square. Jumping down the last step brought her up against a wall that toppled her to the floor.
Stunned, she lay still with her papers strewn around her and the light from the transom windows blocked by whatever had felled her.
A masculine, ungloved hand reached toward her. “I’m terribly sorry, miss. Entirely my fault. Are you hurt?” His accent was strange, American perhaps. Having no gloves on, she was hesitant to touch him, but there was no help for it. She couldn’t remain on her back like a turtle. The warmth of his skin traveled up her arm, and her cheeks heated. His fingers were strong and rough. This was no gentleman’s hand. She stood as he eased her to her feet. “Not at all,” she said. “I was distracted.”
He towered over her. At her full height of barely over five feet, she craned her neck and was frozen by the most stunning pair of golden eyes, olive skin and full lips. She blinked to focus on the whole rather than the parts. “Anthony Braighton?”
He bowed over her hand, which he still held firmly in his. “Lady Serena or Sylvia? I’m afraid I don’t know.”

The mention of her twin’s name brought reality crashing back on Sylvia. She pulled her hand back and made a curtsy. “A common mistake, sir. I am Sylvia Dowder. My sister is still living at home.”
Cocking his head, he gawked at her. “And you are now living here at Everton House, Miss Dowder?”
“I have joined the Society.” While he seemed only curious, it still rubbed her wrong, and she forced herself not to defend her decisions. Anthony Braighton was just a rich gentleman from America. His opinion didn’t mean anything.
“Because of Lord March?” The problem with Americans was they said exactly what they thought rather than keeping a conversation polite. Sylvia bit down on the inside of her cheek. The last thing she wanted was to recount the demise of her engagement to Hunter Gautier, the current Viscount of March. She had been so close to the altar before disaster struck. No. She wouldn’t think about that anymore. “My reasons are not your concern, Mr. Braighton. If you’ll excuse me, I have to see the butler.” His eyes were wide. “Have I been rude, Miss Dowder? I assure you,
it was not my intention. I only meant to convey that March’s treatment of you was abominable and no one blames you.”
Despite his effort to make things better, his mention of what everyone in London knew of her life and failure only exacerbated her mortification. Still, she could see he was sincere, if mistaken. “There is no harm, Mr. Braighton. I am uninjured.”
“I am pleased to hear that. It seems I have a bad habit of offending the English with regularity.” His smile created the most charming dimple in his left cheek, and his eyes sparkled with mischief.
If she were honest, she did not mind looking at Anthony Braighton.
Best not to be too honest. “I am made of tougher stuff than most.” “Indeed.” That dimple deepened, and he raised an eyebrow. Looking at
the pages in her hand, he said, “I’m keeping you from something. Forgive me. I was on my way to see Lady Jane Everton.”
Curiosity over what troubles might bring a rich young man to the Everton Domestic Society warred with her need to have her article delivered to her editor before her deadline passed. Her training as a lady won the battle. She gestured toward the hallway, which led behind the stairs. “Lady Jane’s office is the first door on the right.”
“Thank you, Miss Dowder. Very nice to see you again.” “And you, Mr. Braighton. If you will excuse me.”
He bowed, and she rushed from the foyer to find Gray, the Evertons’ aging butler.

When the man Sylvia Dower was aligned to marry unexpectedly inherited the title of Viscount, he decided he could do better for a wife and influenced her to call off their wedding. Now disgraced in society, and on her own mother's bad side for wasting family time and finances, Sylvia takes herself off the marriage market and becomes an Everton Lady. While still reputable, it is a step down in society. Sylvia uses her position to become a secret gossip columnist, with the purpose of improving lives and fighting injustices, such as bullying.
Anthony Braighton was born in England but raised in America. He is a younger son who never expected to inherit a title. He also felt no call to marry and keep the family line populated. He finds himself in a position of not only inheriting an Earldom, but in need of a woman's help in keeping up appearances and satisfying his mother and aunt. He was not expecting someone like Sylvia
This is a beautiful novel of finding love in unexpected places while remaining true to oneself and one's dreams. The chemistry between these two main characters is palpable from the very beginning. Of course, even though they both deny desiring this journey to lead to marriage, the course of their relationship, whatever it may be called, can not run smoothly.
Plus, Sylvia has a twin sister to be married off, and a mother to answer to, even if she is no longer under her roof.
The secondary characters in this book are just as delightful as our protagonists.
I had to laugh as I envisioned a house full of servants distraught about an early delivery of household goods and no game plan, when Sylvia is not supervising.
Her ability to relate to and communicate with all classes endeared me to Sylvia even more.

A wonderful opportunity to drop into the past and view a more ordered life, while enjoying some rebellion and a little bit of social justice. A romantic adventure with some deception required to get to a happy ending.

I took my time to savor this book before I wrote this review. I inherited my love of cookbooks from my mother, who appreciated the photos more than she did following the recipes. If she were still with us, this book would make a most excellent gift for her. She would approve of the size, format, layout and photos of this wonderful book.
My son is the one who enjoys trying out new recipes, especially with ingredients he has not used before. I predict this book will find itself in his kitchen before long.

The use of beef and pork are not often included in Indian recipes, preference given to goat meat, or as this author has substituted, lamb. Like myself, when using chicken, this author prefers the darker, more moist, portions. She also advises on how to choose a good chicken. There are also SO MANY delicious meatless recipes included that you could go months without adding meat to your menu and your family may not complain.
If you are concerned that your diet requires more protein, have no fear. There is an entire chapter devoted to the topic.
I also loved how the author suggests ways younger persons can assist in the kitchen with food prep! I believe that getting them involved leads to developing a more adventurous palate and greater acceptance of a varied diet.

Do not skip the introductory pages of this amazing book. While you will want to jump right in and start testing out recipes, the information presented about the use of ingredients and creation of recipes, the author's actual influences, etc. are well worth your time. She even includes her cat's contributions. (Smile)
Another much appreciated feature of this book is that sections are designated as to seasons of the year, although you can use them any time you have ingredient availability. I like to cook with ingredients as fresh as possible, or farm to table.

Do not be intimidated by the idea of seasonings you are unfamiliar with. Challenge yourself to try something new and bit by bit I know you will accumulate a new collection of favorite recipes.

Rinku Bhattacharya (spicechronicles.com) was born in India, and now lives in a house with a vibrant backyard in Hudson Valley, New York with her husband, an avid gardener, and their two children. Rinku’s simple, sustainable approach to Indian cooking is showcased on her blog, Spice Chronicles, and in her Journal News column “Spices and Seasons.”

Rinku has been teaching recreational cooking classes for the past nine years, and works extensively with local area farmer’s markets on seasonal demonstrations and discussions. Rinku is also the author of The Bengali Five Spice Chronicles (Hippocrene Books, 2012), winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2013 for Best Indian Cuisine. I absolutely love listening to Mike Alger read these thrilling stories. From the voice of Nigel to the contributions of Sterling and Monique, to the echoey sounds of retrospection, this is a nonstop heart pounding mystery adventure.
What happens when the wife you thought was dead for years is spotted waiting for a train? And you are forced to kill an international assassin to save her life? How do you explain that to the authorities, who may not actually BE the authorities?!?!?
Bringing together some of the younger and still active members of those unnamed government agencies (and friends, family, etc) plus a group of senior crime solvers, you have to pay close attention to find out who is who and on whose side.
What did Blair see and know that required her to leave her family and make others think her husband Chris was not always a good person. When she is killed for a second time...
Politics and espionage and treachery on all levels, including gossipy neighbors, this is a series that will thrill crime readers who enjoy military tales and technology and complicated plots.
