Matt's swirly world

Meet the Author:

Aspiring contemporary ballerina, commercial poet, grateful wife and mother. Certified Life Coach, BA Finance, MA Statistics ( don't judge, I was young ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ), now IT Product Manager. When I was pregnant with my now 3 y/o boy, I was worried of how I can raise my child to cope in a world of bullying, peer pressure, substance abuse, screen time etc. My husband told me that if we want our son to thrive in this world, all we need to do is build his self-confidence & firm limits. So that's how I started reading parenting books, and read a lot. I read tons of books on the latest research discoveries in interpersonal biology and brain development. I love anything that Daniel J Siegel ever wrote. I am also a fan of "How to talk so kids would listen" by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

For "Matt's swirly world," I worked with a psychologist who specialized in child development and attachment parenting. That's because, I am above all, convinced of the immense potential every child has and their absolute innocence. I know from experience that raising kids can often feel quite differently, and challenging. I am convinced that the way to turn that potential into peaceful family lives and well balanced kids - is both intuition and science (and patience). Being emotionally available as a parent, being present for them and for yourself, to keep your own emotional highs & lows in check. Because they are good at triggering us, aren't they? When I was 8, I had no money to buy my mother gifts; I really wanted to create joy in her heart, so I started dedicating poems to her. That's what got me started writing.

A Blog Post by Cara Mia Delgatto of the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series
(With help from Joanna Campbell Slan)
It’s only natural that the Treasure Chest, a store specializing in secondhand objects, would become a hub for secondhand pets, isn’t it? I think so. My name is Cara Mia Delgatto, and I never planned to be the unofficial Queen of Rescue Pets. But then I didn’t plan to own a retail store, either. Like my fur-legged friends, I wanted a second chance at life. After my parents died within six months of each other and my son went off to college, I sold the family business and took off on a road trip. My car acted up about the time I spotted the exit sign for Stuart, Florida. Not wanting to chance a roadside breakdown, I headed for the Gas E Bait, my grandfather’s gas station and garage. Poppy and I had been estranged because he hadn’t come to the funeral of my mother, his daughter. However, it didn’t take long for me to work out that he had a good reason. His health was seriously in decline. Clearly, he needed me—and to be honest, I guess I needed him, too.
On a whim, I bought what I thought was an abandoned building only to discover it was occupied by a fresh corpse. Unfortunately, my past caught up with me. The local authorities had good reason to worry that I might be involved in that murder.
I muddled through with a lot of help from my new friends, and of course, my fur babies. Really, I can’t imagine a satisfying life without them. In short order, I adopted Jack, a 2 ½ lb. white Chihuahua that was literally tossed out of a speeding truck. Then came Luna, the gray cat whose owner’s death became another crime for me to solve. Next I added Gerard. He’s a Royal Bahamian Potcake, a type of dog indigenous to the Bahamas.
Gerard is only a pup, but my other two furry friends are senior citizens. That’s why I have a soft spot in my heart for Summer Snoops Unleashed. All the pre-order funds will go to three organizations that make senior rescue dogs their priority. After all, these pets have spent the best years of their lives loving their owners. Haven’t they earned the right to spend their last days on earth being coddled? I sure think so.
There are 14 brand spanking new books in the Summer Snoops Unleashed 14 Book Box Set. The books are all by different authors and include both human and canine recipes.
Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to spend 99 cents, can you?

A Knead to Kill by Chelsea Thomas features an amateur sleuth by the same name, and her Aunt May and hysterical friend Teeny. Having already solved one murder mystery, they are headed outside of Pine Grove to a bread baking competition, only to discover, in a most disturbing fashion, that the ill tempered celebrity judge has been murdered! Will the competition continue to go on? Since this famous personality berated everyone with contempt, there could be an endless supply of suspects. Who had the opportunity? Why is it Chelsea's luck to have discovered the body?
A quick paced and quirky cozy mystery with all the right ingredients.

I write clean, classic whodunnits with realistic characters and situations. It’s probably because my first book was based on a true-life murder mystery from my own family. That book, Sharpe Shooter, led to the Maycroft Mysteries. I also write Killer Shots Mysteries and the Beachside Bookshop Magical Cozy Mysteries (co-written with Paula Lester.) I call my books “Mysteries with Heart & Humor,” and that’s just what you’ll get.
When not writing, I enjoy my grown husband and dog, my children, grandchildren, grandpets, photography, traveling, and antiquing (aka. buying and selling used junk).

YOU'VE BEEN VOLUNTEERED BOOK TOUR

You've Been Volunteered: A Class Mom Novel
by Laurie Gelman

About the Book

Laurie Gelman
Humorous Fiction 2nd in Series
Henry Holt and Co. (July 23, 2019)
Hardcover: 288 pages
ISBN-10: 1250301858
ISBN-13: 978-1250301857
Digital ASIN: B07HLZH7BH

In the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Laurie Gelman’s "irreverent and hilarious" (The New York Post) hit Class Mom, brash, lovable Jen Dixon is back with a new class and her work cut out for her

If you’ve ever been a room parent or school volunteer, Jen Dixon is your hero. She says what every class mom is really thinking, whether in her notoriously frank emails or standup-worthy interactions with the micromanaging PTA President and the gamut of difficult parents. Luckily, she has the charm and wit to get away with it—most of the time. Jen is sassier than ever but dealing with a whole new set of challenges, in the world of parental politics and at home.
She’s been roped into room-parenting yet again, for her son Max’s third grade class, but as her husband buries himself in work, her older daughters navigate adulthood, and Jen’s own aging parents start to need some parenting themselves, Jen gets pulled in more directions than any one mom, or superhero, can handle.
Refreshingly down-to-earth and brimming with warmth, Dixon’s next chapter will keep you turning the pages to find out what’s really going on under the veneer of polite parent interactions, and have you laughing along with her the whole way.

With sass and snark, we are treated to the communications and experiences of a third grade classroom mother and her ongoing obligations. Third grade is tough, not only for the kids and teachers. The kids are "not as cute" any more and participating in their classroom activities and field trips, etc are not as fresh for the parents. Jen Dixon tries to liven things up.
There is a new mother in town, who must get used to Jen's ways of communicating, Jen's husband is trying to scale up his sports business, and Jen discovers the life-changing effects of spinning!

Laugh your way through the trials of third grade, and creating a fifth grade safety patrol system when the school crossing guard retires. Jen has the added discomfort of watching her older daughters act in ways similar to her own wild youth, and now she knows some of what she put her own mother through.

Ivy

Book Details:

Book Title: Ivy (The Montgomery Sisters Book 3) by Kat Flannery
Category: Historical western romance, 164 pages
Genre: Adult Non-Fiction
Publisher: Picco Press
Release date: November 11, 2018
Tour dates: July 1-31, 2019
Content Rating: PG + M (swearing and mild violence)

Book Description:

Ivy Montgomery is tired of her sister’s constant nagging and protectiveness. Blind, she decides to escape in the middle of the night when she is captured and brought far from home. With no understanding of the outside world, Ivy must use her keen abilities to navigate the wilderness around her. Anger and hopelessness are her only defenses against the things she cannot do.

Until she meets a strong-minded Lakota Chief, who will not let her cower to the blindness any longer. Lakota Sioux Chief of the Paha Sapa, Hotah is on a hunt for his brother, Kangi. Cast from their tribe five years before, Kangi has grown a dark spirit and a hatred for all white people. Now on reserved land, Hotah makes a deal with the General to capture his brother in return for his people to have the provisions they need. After rescuing Ivy, he promises to take her home, but danger is near and Hotah soon realizes it is not just his brother he should fear.

A blind woman and a Sioux Chief…

Writing is not an easy task, and to write an engaging novel takes time, and patience. Novellas are a diabolical thing all on their own. The pacing is quicker, the story shorter, and the outcome has to be just as satisfying as a full-length novel.
The Montgomery Sister’s is a novella series, and thus, writing Ivy’s story proved to be a lot more difficult than I’d anticipated. I’d never written about a blind character before, and although it was intriguing the story did not want to flow like the others before. How does one write from a blind person perspective when they are not blind themselves? Well, like I write all of my historical novels…research.
A lot of it.
Ivy nestled herself inside of my heart, and I wanted to make her story not only one of redemption but also one of resilience. After all who better to succeed than a blind woman with no self-esteem or know how of the real world?
I could not fail her. The story had to be perfect, engaging and emotional. How was I going to do this in a novella? How was I going to explore all of this amazing character in 30,000 words? The pressure mounted as I pondered this very thing. I refused to begin writing until I had it all worked out in my head…which is not a normal process for me. I usually have the idea and go with it, but not this time. I muddled along for weeks considering all aspects of this troubled woman, and then it hit me. She needed a special man to help her see who she really was. This couldn’t be any man either, he had to be strong-minded, caring and patient.
Introducing Lakota Chief, Hotah of the Paha Sapa tribe.

When I wrote the first scene with Ivy and Hotah together everything fell into place. Hotah needed Ivy as much as she needed him. Together they learned how to trust, and fight for what they wanted. Learning to lean on the each other is what makes these two characters so amazing, and their story soon filled the pages and my heart.

Three sisters who basically have raised themselves in barely settled territory. The first two have proven themselves strong but found love and have decided to remain together, since Poppy and her husband may travel together as Pinkertons. Ivy, the youngest, has been isolated and pampered by the elder sisters, as her sight has been declining. However she is made of just as stern stuff as the other two. The trouble is they have grown used to not seeing her as capable.

Hotah, chief of a local Sioux Indian tribe, has always been a proud, strong warrior. He has always had the best interests of his people at heart. He trusted the U.S. government when they said his people would be taken care of if he cooperated. Family loyalty is strong among his people's beliefs.
His brother became a renegade, mentally unstable when his wife died, and did not join their people on the reservation. Soon the time came when Hotah has to make another difficult choice, and agree to find his brother, in exchange for the tribe to get the previously agreed upon provisions and care.

It is during this time when Hotah finds himself rescuing Ivy and having to choose which ultimate sacrifice is the least painful road.

I will be honest and say that I did not enjoy this book as well as the first two. The writing is still high quality and the story kept my interest, but it did not grab me as emotionally as the first two books of the series. It is a more difficult book to read, but clearly showed the parallels between the imprisoned lives of both main characters.

Based on real events, where women had to step up during times of war and take on nontraditional jobs, and food and other supplies were rationed, the East End Angels are a group of ambulance staff, who do their part to support additional aspects of the war effort. They are loyal and brave, and have to overcome their own fears and put personal relationships on hold while the unknown threatens daily. If you have read one or more of the previous books in this series you will already be fans of the author's writing and the characters as we watch friendships grow closer than those of blood relatives.
The women face danger both on and off the job as they share real fears and raw emotions. From missing family members to loved ones deployed to unknown locations, and not heard from for months, to happier times including a wedding dress that is refitted to several brides, and a sweet dog who is part of this growing family, and a baby who grows into a delightful toddler whose love fills the heats of those who were there at her birth, and declaration that war is over, even though that does not mean all the work is done, this is a series to get lost in. If you were not a history fan before, your interest will be piqued. I am sure your eyes will also be opened.

It is always sad when a book is designated as the final installment. This author has given us not only a satisfying ending but the potential for running into these dear friends again somewhere in time.

Author Bio – Rosie Hendry lives by the sea in Norfolk with her husband, two children, chickens and a snake. She's worked in a variety of jobs from fruit picking, waitressing, teaching and as a research scientist but has always loving reading and writing. Starting off writing short stories for women's magazines, her stories have gradually become longer as her children have grown bigger.

Listening to her father's tales of life during the Second World War sparked Rosie's interest in this period and she's especially intrigued by how women’s lives changed during the war years. She loves researching further, searching out gems of real-life events which inspire her writing.

When she's not working, Rosie enjoys walking along the beach, reading and is grateful for the fact that her husband is a much better cook than her.

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores by Laura Briggs

A Spirited Girl on Cornish Shores
(A Little Hotel in Cornwall Book 2)

It looks like a perfect Cornish autumn, with aspiring novelist Maisie Clark still finding inspiration as a maid at the historic Penmarrow Hotel.
Between the staff of quirky co-workers, glamorous and unusual guests, and her growing friendship with the charming but mysterious Sidney Daniels, Maisie is living out adventures instead of just penning them in the pages of her would-be novel's growing number of chapters.

And then there's the slight problem of keeping the balance between friendship and 'something more' with Sidney, who's helping introduce her to the village's version of a Cornish Halloween, and has recently taken an interest in Maisie's secret that may change things between them.
But even Maisie’s imagination can't conjure the unusual event this Halloween brings to the Penmarrow.
An eccentric earl has chosen this site to host his lavish birthday celebration that includes a pretty (and perceptive) young psychic whose predictions seem to have everyone on edge — and, to Maisie's delight, the elusive novelist Alistair Davies is rumored to be part of the guest list! But with the earl's bickering relatives and illustrious friends on hand— and more than one ghost of the past waiting to be revealed — it’s anyone’s guess what the festivities will bring before the party is over.

Will the psychic foretell doom for the earl's gathering—and is her ‘gift’ as genuine as it seems? Will Maisie finally meet her favorite author face to face? And, more importantly, what about the romantic sparks that fly between Maisie and Sidney?

I read this as a stand alone, but know I would enjoy stepping back one book and discovering exactly how Maisie found herself at the Penmarrow hotel. All is explained but I would like to experience it along with aspiring author Maisie Clark, now known (sometimes) as Marji Kinnan.
The Halloween season is upon us, although not celebrated in quite the same way as in the U.S..
There are still traditions and games and costumes and a good time had by all ages.
The hotel has been booked fully by one family to celebrate the patriarch's centennial birthday.
He has included some close friends and a psychic. Normal family bickering applies, especially when an inheritance is anticipated. Most importantly to Maisie is the anticipated appearance of a famous author, whom she hopes will help her with her desired career.
The staff of Penmarrow seems to have ample time off to take part in village festivities. Also to have some romantic, or semi-romantic, adventures. One seems to run afoul for porter Riley.

Naturally it seems the psychic's predictions would make up a significant portion of the book, but I found it to be well balanced in all aspects. I enjoyed the characters and the setting and all the village activities as well as the seances and predictions.

I am looking forward to reading more in this series as Maisie discovers more about herself and her own style.

A GENUINE FIX

A Genuine Fix (An Allie Cobb Mystery) by J.C. Kenney

About the Book

Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series
Lyrical Underground (July 16, 2019)
Paperback: 194 pages
ISBN-10: 1516108604
ISBN-13: 978-1516108602
Digital ASIN: B07KDWV2RX

Murder takes a page out of a killer’s playbook when literary agent Allie Cobb becomes her Indiana town’s number-one bestselling suspect …
Running the family literary business while preparing for her best friend’s wedding, chairing a park planning committee, and getting her rescue cat to bond with her boyfriend’s golden retriever doesn’t leave Allie Cobb much time for crime-solving. But when the guy who stood her up the night of her high school senior prom is killed and dumped in a pile of mulch, Allie’s suddenly the prime suspect.
It’s insulting enough that gambler, drunk, and all-around lowlife Georgie Alonso was found on the site of the memorial park honoring Allie’s deceased father. Now she’s fighting to clear her name and hold off a rush to judgment. But politics, decades-old secrets, and a slew of high-profile suspects make dangerous bedfellows as the eve of the park’s grand opening draws nearer. She’ll have to nab a killer soon, before her storybook life gets a bad ending …

Allie returned home to Indiana (in the previous book) for her father's funeral and found herself solving the murder of her best friend's father. She decided to stay and take over her own father's Literary Agency. Taking over a business, as much as starting a new one, takes time and patience and focus. Things Allie soon find take a lot of effort.
Allie is also becoming involved in community affairs, such as helping on a Mayoral campaign, working against a man she has a complicated relationship with already. They must work together to complete a community park to be named after her own father and that of her best friend.
All aspects of this book are intertwined, as are the clues and red herrings presented. You don't need to have read the previous book to follow along, but I enjoyed A Literal Mess and am sure you will also.
All the cozy mystery must haves are included.
As if that is not enough tension, aforementioned best friend, Sloane, is moving in with Allie's brother as they prepare for their wedding. Much is happening as this plot flows quickly forward.
What else could go wrong?

We all know not to ask. Taking her celebrity kitty out for a walk, to check on the new park status, the pair uncovers a dead body. The police chief is Allie's former brother-in-law and the victim was not a well liked person. As is often the case, the police are more concerned with closing the case than finding a true, guilty party and need it wrapped up before election time.
Allie makes a convenient top suspect. Her only hope is to solve the crime before time runs out.

Great friendships and wonderful community characters. All the things we love in a fun, cozy mystery.
