Thanks
so much for inviting me onto your blog today to chat about characters. When I
visit schools to do an assembly, I always include some character work - I love
showing the pupils how a character builds up in layers to become as
distinctive, real and individual as the instantly recognisable Greg Heffley
(Diary of a Wimpy Kid) or Matilda (Roald Dahl). Inevitably, they then ask about
my characters. Is it like being a parent when I shouldn’t have favourites? I fully admit I love writing Pippin - she is
totally unpredictable and regularly writes herself into and out of scenes as
she fancies, no matter how hard I plan for her! She actually changed name and
gender while I was drafting book one, Eternal Seas.
Character Profile
1. Name:
Pippin
2. Age: 9
3. Birthday:
17 August (star sign: Leo)
4. General physical description: Long, tangled dark hair. She’s a bit of a tomboy and
not bothered about her appearance - her socks are usually mismatched and often
have holes in them.
5. Hometown:
She’s a bit cagey about her past! She was rescued from Sir Waldred when Finn
and Aria were in New London and has become a core part of the crew of their
boat, The Alcina.
6. Best friend.
Her cat, Hobnob. Named after the best chocolate biscuit in the world.
Controversial author statement alert!
7. Attitude toward school: She’s very bright and loves science but didn’t have
much formal schooling while she was a prisoner. Now, she is home-schooled with
Finn and Aria.
8. Grades:
Who knows! Nobody has ever given her an exam.
9. Favourite pastimes: Gymnastics and dance.
10. Favourite food:
Noodles. Preferably spicy.
11. Dress style:
Quirky. She has her own unique style.
12. Strongest positive personality trait: Self-sufficiency and lateral thinking.
13. Strongest negative personality trait: Impulsive.
14. Consideration for others: She’s been left to fend for herself for a long time
so is enjoying being part of a team.
15. Philosophy of life: “No worries!” I guess if she’d seen the Lion King she’d say “Hakuna
matata.” I actually didn’t realise this was a Swahili phrase - I thought it was
just made up for the film.
16. Most important thing to know about character: What secrets lie in her past?
17. Will readers like this character, and why? Absolutely! She’s a feisty, funny, fierce young
lady.
Illustration
To
complete the picture, I thought you might like to see this illustration of
Pippin doing a science experiment in a borrowed lab coat and holding a set of
security access passes that she “liberated” from their careless owners. My son drew this sketch.
