Third Chronicles of Illumination by C.A. Pack

Summary from Goodreads:

Oh, no! Johanna Charette and Jackson Roth have allowed a sneaky shapeshifter to slip right through their fingers. The good news is that he’s now trapped between the layers of time and space with their Terrorian nemesis, Nero 51.
The bad news is the Terrorian wants to control all the Libraries of Illumination, while the shapeshifter wants to control everything else. Who knows how long the Illumini system will remain safe?
It’s taking a toll on Johanna and Jackson, who are smack in the center of everything as they struggle to protect the libraries’ legacy.
Can you spell s-t-r-e-s-s?
The pressure is driving a stake between the teens, and their mercurial romance could be over before it has truly begun.

I love any book having to do with the magic and mysteries of Merlin.
War is on the horizon for the 12 realms, with Nero 51 and his warriors invading the other realms.
When they become trapped in a sealed library will his followers discover his true colors?
And does the seemingly all powerful ghost of a shapeshifter desire more control than he is letting on?

The citizens of each realm are figuring out how to protect themselves and this leads to some sports like game playing.  Even under threat of annihilation, romance plays its own games, creating tension and complications for Johanna and Jackson.
Full of tension and creative problem solving, mystical fantasy elements and  varied terse confrontations between characters,  this next book in the series will keep you immersed in C.A. Pack's fantastical world.

Told in alternating character viewpoints, this wildly imaginative series is centered around 12 libraries by way of which you can move to any of the other 12 realms. The world building is well done. It doesn't take long for the reader to imagine being right in the action.
Each realm has its own traits and characteristics. Nero 51 is determined to rule over them all.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, so this is a book best read through as much as possible without setting it down for long. A combination of fantasy and science fiction with slight paranormal elements.

The main characters, Jackson and Johanna, have some common interests but very different points of view. This often leads them into dangerous situations as they travel between the realms. Both being teenagers, they can still act impulsively.

C. A. Pack is the author of the Library of Illumination series of YA paranormal fantasy novelettes, along with Chronicles: The Library of Illumination (2014), The Second Chronicles of Illumination (2015) and The Third Chronicles of Illumination (2017).

She also worked on PBS documentaries, radio and television commercials and created and produced a pilot for a news show focusing solely on marriage and wedding trends.

She's a past president of the Press Club of Long Island and a proud member of International Thriller Writers and Sisters in Crime. Pack has been a speaker or panelist for organizations such as Women in Communications, Fair Media Council, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
