The Last Shadow Gate by Michael W. Garza

Summer vacation was never supposed to be like this.

It was bad enough Naomi had to be shipped off to her dad's home for the summer and deal with her half-brother Gavin, but when the siblings are forced to spend their break with their great-grandmother in upstate New York, everything changes. An investigation into the strange disappearance of their great-grandfather forces them to retrace his footsteps. They discover a gateway between worlds and encounter extraordinary creatures in a land where the people are desperate to escape the coming of a shade lord. To survive their adventure, Naomi and Gavin must settle their differences and find the elusive shadow gate that will take them home again.

Divorce is tough on everyone, especially the kids. When those kids are step-siblings, living in different states, getting to know each other can become more complicated, and require different rules. Naomi and Gavin are a couple of years apart, entering the volatile changes that come with being teenagers, so having their summer vacation planned for them, not just away from their friends but with an ANCIENT relative...well, you can guess how they feel about that.

Michael W. Garza know exactly how to tell this tale from the perspective of a twelve year old boy's mind. The endless possibilities and limitless imagination all shine through. Adventure appeals, danger awaits, and Gavin feels the need to "man up" and protect his sister. I will admit there were a few moments when I felt this tale had a slightly chauvinistic slant but overall the author equalizes his viewpoint.

Michael is also an awesome world builder. The details had me following along right with the kids and their temporary caretakers as they traversed different locations. The fantastical "creatures," or rather inhabitants of worlds beyond the Shadow Gate are creatively imagined and well defined, both in physical appearance and in depth of character. Their past experiences shaping how they view their world.

Their world is not a rainbows and lollipops. It has experienced war and shows the aftermath both is appearance and an atmosphere of separation and suspicion. Future fighting is again on the horizon. Even with these dark times quite evident, there are lighter moments and humor represented in the tale. The only choice the siblings have is to continue to move forward.

This is a remarkable adventure that will be enjoyed by young readers as well as the parents who want to read along with them. It is an adventure that any science fiction or fantasy readers can appreciate.
