 You definitely have to have read previous books in the series to keep up with all that is happening in this edition, the seventh book of this fantastical series. It begins immediately as the group is plunged through a dimensional portal. Horace, the man with the mirrors that make travel possible, who is also Imogen's brother, is nowhere to be found.
They know this is the land to which the monsters have been banished but before they must face that threat they are captured and their magic invalidated.

The people who have captured them are searching for one of their own who disappeared while checking monster traps. They seem not to trust any strangers and are concerned Imogen's group had something to do with their Captain's disappearance. 

Excellent world building and fast action create a very tense and unpredictable adventure.
This is good vs evil as well as deception and attraction and greed and inhumanity.
Did they leave one prisoner situation only to be captured again?
As the bakers try to prove themselves as trustworthy, someone is sabotaging the mission. 
What is this person's motive? Why is Hank behaving so withdrawn and sullen? Does Sam have more to fear than the others? Who will survive?
