A Little Hotel in Cornwall by Laura Briggs Publication Day!!

A Little Hotel in Cornwall

Struggling American waitress and aspiring novelist Maisie Clark dreams of becoming a full-time writer — even though in real life she's just lost her chance at an exclusive writer's mentorship program that would give her novel its big break. Desperate, she decides to take a chance and ask her favourite writer, a celebrated but reclusive English novelist, to help her find a second chance.

When she receives the author's reply in an envelope with a Cornish postmark, Maisie decides not to take the writer's half-hearted 'no' for an answer. With nothing to lose, she takes off for the author's last known location, a beautiful hotel on Cornwall's western coast. But when the hotel mistakes her for the latest applicant for a maid's position, Maisie finds herself given an opportunity too good to lose ... and a chance for a summer adventure far bigger than she ever imagined.

Surrounded by breathtaking Cornwall and working in an elegant hotel, Maisie's world becomes one of secret identities, quirky friends, and unintentional mishaps — and despite reminders of past relationship disasters, a certain handsome, charming local resident Sidney Daniels has her conflicted about her heart's desires, too.

Will Maisie find the chance she's been waiting for — and a possible new romance — in her perfect Cornish summer?

Thank you so much to Laura for letting me share an excerpt from A Little Hotel in Cornwall with her lovely readers today! This scene finds the heroine Maisie on her way to the beautiful, historic hotel where a famous English novelist might be staying. An aspiring writer herself, Maisie hopes the great author will give her some much needed help in salvaging her dream of becoming a writer.

The Penmarrow Hotel was indeed at the top of the hill — one carved halfway off on one side, leaving steep cliffs hanging over the beach and the ocean, with the tall mansion sitting alone atop that flat green crest. The view of the manor I had seen from the village's entrance belonged to this place, I discovered, as I climbed the hill to its location.
Pale red bricks and grey stone, arched windows stacked four stories high, with towers and chimneys rising from the roof above. I set down my luggage for a moment in the car park and took it in, the awe-inspiring house facing the water.
The sea looked big enough to swallow this spot. A vast blue blanket among rocks which emerged like islands from the mists and foam. Paved pathways of cobblestone divided the hotel's green lawn on the cliffs above the water into neatly-manicured squares. From where I stood, in one direction were the lawn and the view of the sea; in the other, a walled-off yard behind stones on the other side of the car park. Green was the dominant color glimpsed over stone garden wall.
Downton Abbey. Brideshead Castle. Cliff End. Misselthwaite Manor. Dozens of fictional English manors came to mind, suggested by this majestic, towering hall. I had stepped into one of the books of my university days, the old romances set in grand old houses, and now I was going to have to find my reality in it.
It was time to go inside and ask for Mr. Davies. I would probably be denied at the desk, and would be left to hover in the lobby until someone who looked like the famous writer came down — and this part of the adventure was as far as my plans reached. I squared my shoulders and collected my bags so I could go and face this moment, as I had promised myself. Just not through the intimidating front door, maybe.
A little gate stood open, and human voices emerged. I walked in the direction of the sound and the glimpse of green on the other side. There might be a patio on that side of the garden, where a writer might sit and absorb the atmosphere. There might be fellow guests who knew if a famous author stayed here recently. If I were very lucky —
I stepped through the gateway, and discovered I was wrong about this. Instead of a tea party of guests or an Erich Segal lookalike deep in thought, I found a walled-off yard where a classic Rolls-Royce was parked, black paint gleaming in the sun, and three men were sitting just outside of a tiny arched side door.

GETTING HOT WITH THE SCOT

The first in a new series, a journalist focused on her career and a sexy Scottish comedian turn a one night stand into forever.

Cassie Crow leaves for vacation with two goals: fill up her empty charm bracelet and have a one night stand. For once, she wants to have fun instead of obsessively checking her work email. And kissing a man in a castle who’s dressed as a Scottish Highlander is the perfect solution.

Except when that man turns out to be Logan Reid, the host of a popular sketch show—and Cassie has just been roped into his latest prank. She wants nothing to do with his antics, but that was a really great kiss, and one night together couldn’t hurt.

It’s clear that one night isn’t enough and when Logan’s show brings him closer to Cassie, they decide to give dating a try. Can the woman who’s focused solely on her career and the man who refuses to take life seriously make it work?

Who hasn't fantasized abut a sexy vacation fling? It is so out of character for Cassie Crow, for whom becoming a serious, respectable reporter has always been her focus. However for this trip she has come prepared to have "fun." What starts as an impulsive kiss and a random act of flirty fun, has the potential to turn into so much more.
In so many ways, Logan Reid is the total opposite. He only wants to have fun and be famous. Running into Cassie has him hot under the kilt and unprepared for the emotional impact to follow. He wants to have a good time but can't stop there. She has gotten to him like no one has ever before.
This is the perfect vacation read, or perhaps even better for those times you can't take off on an adventure of your own. You'll be hearing the burr of his brogue as you read.
With quick switches between points of view, this is a sexy yet funny book that will keep you turning pages far into the night.

The Moment We Fell by Kelli Warner

Summer On The Italian Lakes

The fun part about being an author is that you get to spend your days in some wonderful locations, even if it’s virtually!
But the only way to be able to sit down and really share with the readers what the experience is like, is to visit in person.

Lake Garda is a place I have visited several times over the years, and it will always be one of my all-time favourite holiday destinations. Whether you fly direct or are planning a grand European tour by road – it is a dream destination.
The villa featured in Summer on the Italian Lakes is fictitious but based on a composite of two properties in which I have stayed. But the descriptions of being up in the hills and the trips taken are real-life experiences.
Italy is an overload of stimuli – everywhere you look, every breath you take in, and everything you touch, fills your heart with love for the vibrancy and warmth of this beautiful country. It’s full of passionate people – for love and life. Fiery temperaments, fabulous food and wonderful wines; flavours that literally grab you with their freshness and taste. Wonderful music and art; scenery that will make your jaw drop; beautiful architecture around which to saunter and so many hidden gems to discover.
But up in the hills where it’s quieter, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with the inner you. For me a holiday has to combine everything – lots of exciting things to experience, but also some time to relax and chill.
So, it was the perfect setting for this book and the only sadness for me, was that I didn’t get to do a research trip! I didn’t need to as all of those memories are locked inside my head, and my heart – but, oh, Italy is calling me loud and clear! If you haven’t been, please do add it to your list of must-sees and Lake Garda is the perfect place to begin.

Daring Dreamer by Deborah King

Daring Dreamer
Two best friends. Two fresh starts. Will old regrets sabotage their second chance?
Janna’s heart is heavy with grief and broken by betrayal. But as she leaves the big city for a quaint midwestern town, the future feels less frightening with her best friend, Shelby, by her side. After landing a job in the local fresh market and the attentions of a handsome architect, she may yet learn to heal old scars…

Shelby loves the position Janna secured for her and the new sense of community, but wishes small-town life wasn’t so lonely. After packing up all she could salvage from her painful past, she endures more than her fair share of bumps on the winding road to recovery. Afraid her heart may be too damaged for real love, she drowns her sorrows in drunken nights at bars.

A descriptive portrait of accepting changes in life and following your intuition, having faith in a larger picture when the desire to achieve your dream is strong.
Told from alternating points of view, with overlaps of the same situations as seen from different views, this is Janna's story. Some could say it is Jana and Shelby's story, others might argue that it is Janna and Richard's story. However you view it, this is the story of two women with a dream and an unstoppable force, in the person of Janna, to keep moving forward to make that dream a reality.
Acting on faith, Janna invests in a new home and creates jobs for herself and best friend, Shelby.
Fate seems to play a role as well, with some clouds but much sunshine and available opportunities.

While neither Janna or Richard is seeking a romantic relationship, some attractions are too strong to avoid. Circumstances keep placing them together, but those times can have dangerous results.
Various story lines run through this book, bringing a community together.

Deborah King is a spirited woman who was inspired to pursue her dreams due to her mother’s death from early onset Alzheimer’s disease. She has the unique ability to read people and tackle life’s hardships.

About the Author

I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom's Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn't flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.
Hide Not Seek is my fifteenth novel.

WED READ AND DEAD

Wed, Read & Dead (Mystery Bookshop)

by V.M. Burns

About the Book

Cozy Mystery 4th in Series
Kensington (April 30, 2019)
Paperback: 272 pages
ISBN-10: 1496718291
ISBN-13: 978-1496718297
Digital ASIN: B07G6RDBRV

Bookstore owner Samantha Washington sells and solves mysteries in North Harbor, Michigan—including the murder of her mother's wedding planner . . .
Sam's mother can't wait to wed her wealthy beau, Harold Robertson. The big mystery is how they're going to pull off a lavish wedding in three weeks. Harold's snobby sister-in-law proposes a solution: engage flamboyant wedding planner Lydia Lighthouse. But their beacon of hope quickly sends everyone into a blind rage, most of all the groom-to-be. So when the maddening micromanager is strangled with her own scarf, it's a shock, but not a surprise.
It’s a case of art imitating life as Sam pens her next historical mystery set in England between the wars. Lady Daphne Marsh insists on marrying Lord James Browning on Christmas Eve, three weeks hence. But when the fop planning their wedding ends up with a knife in his back, she vows to nab the backstabber before she walks down the aisle.
Meanwhile, when she’s not writing, Sam and her beloved and boisterous Nana Jo rush to shine a light on Lydia's killer—so her mother's new husband won't spend his honeymoon behind bars . . .

For better or worse, in good times and bad, til death... or until everything goes wrong.
Sam's mother is trying to plan a wedding in less than a month and at Christmas! To deal with the stress, Sam writes a historical novel about, well, let's just say that art and life are reflecting each other. Harold, the groom, seems like a sweetheart of a man. Could he possibly be accused of murder before the happy couple can walk down the aisle?

The victim is a nightmare wedding planner. Multiple people want her dead, from clients she has bilked out of thousands of dollars, to vendors never paid for their services, and others who get entangled in her schemes.

Adding to the confusion and stress are other romantic gestures, a couple of adorable, aging poodles, more family than can ever be comfortable together at one time, and two young children who show up unexpectedly (and hungry.) I was interested in the genealogy aspects of this novel.

I love the local flavor in the books in this series. The characters are wonderful and relatable.
Nana Jo and her friends are such a treat.

Will this wedding planning have a happy ending? Will Sam be made to wear the pink tulle nightmare or the tablecloth plaid?

Enjoy reading and find out.

MAGICKAL MYSTERY LORE

Magickal Mystery Lore (An Abracadabra Mystery)

by Sharon Pape

About the Book

Paranormal Cozy Mystery 4th in Series
Lyrical Underground (April 16, 2019)
Pages: 317 (including a sneak peek into book 5)
ASIN: B07FS2GCW3

This spells trouble . . .
The New Camel Day Fair is a fun-filled event for residents of this upstate New York town. Kailyn Wilde, a modern-day witch of ancient lineage, leaves her potion shop, Abracadabra—and her feline familiar, Sashkatu—to attend with her fortune-telling Aunt Tilly. Joining them is legendary wizard Merlin, who’s discovering new pleasures of time-traveling to the modern world, including curly fries and kettle corn—but the appeal of the Tilt-a-Wheel is beyond his mystical imagination.
The real wild ride begins later, when neighboring sweet shop owner Lolly rushes into Abracadabra with news about a dead body. The victim has one of Lolly’s fudge knives stuck in her back, but in spite of the sticky evidence, Lolly is only one of several suspects with ample motive and opportunity. Meanwhile, Merlin’s research into old family scrolls and electromagnetic ley lines is causing some unusual mix-ups. As the two investigations collide, Kailyn will have to do everything in her power to prevent disaster…

You can read this as a stand alone, but part of the fun was in how Merlin came to live with Tilly and her niece, Kailyn Wilde, both members of a magical family whose magick doesn't always result in desired effects. Part of this book deals with Merlin's research into what is making their magic go awry.
Another major factor to this book is dysfunctional family relationships, as well as romantic struggles. Kailyn is dating a news reporter, who knows about her magical abilities, and he feels it is time she meets his parents. Her own mother and grandmother have crossed the veil, but still "pop in" for visits.
A woman is discovered dead behind one of the New Camel shops on the day of a town festival, when many of the shops closed for the day. Kailyn knows the shop owner is innocent, but evidence piles up against her and her daughter.
Furry family, aka familiars, also play a fun role as the book unfolds. It seems many animals love to be near Merlin, including an invisible dog summoned from another time and place.

Parts of the story are a bit heavier or darker than many other cozy mysteries, but so much is going on that keeps the action fast paced and entwined with lighter moments.
With Merlin around, life will never be boring.

About the Author

Sharon Pape describes her writing career as having two stages. Back in the dark ages, before computers were in every household, she had three paranormal books published. The first one was condensed by Redbook Magazine, the first paperback original they had ever condensed. Around the same time, Redbook published her first short story.
Then life brought her an unexpected challenge that went by the name of breast cancer. When her treatment was over, she became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program and went on to be the program's coordinator for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. Several years later, with the help of her surgical oncologist and two other survivors, she started her own not-for-profit organization to provide information and peer support to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Once the organization was running smoothly and didn't require as much of her time, she returned to her first love - writing. During this second stage of her career, she's been writing cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist and a splash of humor.
