The time has come for San Ladrón, California’s annual Miss Tangorli beauty pageant, and Poly has agreed to use Material Girl’s inventory of shimmery silks to create embellished gowns fit for a crown. But when millionaire Harvey Halliwell—the man who revived the city’s citrus trade with his imported tangorli tree—is found dead days before the pageant contestants are announced, something sour takes over the town.
To make matters worse, her friend, mechanic Charlie Brooks, is soon caught up in the crime, having been seen in the company of the case’s prime suspect. Now Poly’s on a mission to squeeze out the truth. But as she searches for a pattern, the killer seems intent on cutting up the evidence…
The fantastic storyline makes for a fast and entertaining read. I didn’t want to put it down. ~Lisa K’s Book Reviews
With fun characters and a captivating story line, this book brings twist and turns along the way and a murder that will have you guessing until the very end. ~Shelley’s Book Case
The show must go on! Well, beauty pageants are a form of entertainment, at least to those not directly involved. The cost of involvement keeps rising, and not only the financial cost. Along the same lines, anywhere money becomes the main focus, too important, tensions become ragged and disagreements snag relationships. Secrets are revealed in this latest Material Witness mystery installment.
If you have near you or have regularly visited a tourist-centered town, I bet you recognize some of the colorful local characters -- certain shop and small business owners, those set in their ways, those who insist on being on all the town boards and involved in any well publicized event.
I always find it interesting to learn more about those characters, their motivations and especially their secrets. This book does not disappoint in ANY of those areas. Bolts of backstabbing and suspicious behaviors plus a satisfying ending that will make you feel you want to read each of the other books in this series.
