Being an independent woman in 1913 London is certainly empowering, but Emmy Nation is tired of the inescapable damp seeping through her worn shoes and the hopeless grumblings of her stomach.

How Writing Sprints Changed My Life

I was recently introduced to the concept of a writing sprint and it has completely changed the way I write. A writing sprint is a focused block of time when you try to write as many words as you can.
I have discovered several blogs and sites dedicated to this practice and supporting authors through hosting word sprints. and are just two sites that I love!

So, how does it work and why has it changed my writing? Well, it works like the Pomodoro Technique in which you spend a short amount of time doing a concentrated activity and then you take a break.
The idea being that you remove distraction for a short period of time and then
recover your energy and focus with a quick break before starting again. Because the time of concentrated work is so short, it is easy to get through.

The Pomodoro Technique recommends 25 minutes of work to a 3-5 minute break for four sets, then a longer break of 15-20 minutes.

I have been incorporating word sprints into my writing practice lately because I am in a very hectic time of my life. Where I used to have a few hours a day I could dedicate to writing, now I have maybe one day a week that I can use to write. So, I need to get as much work done in that one day as I can if I am going to make my deadline for my current project, the second Emmy Nation book.

I have been working for 40 minutes periods with a 20-30 minute break between each one and, my oh my, has this changed the way I work. I also take a longer break for lunch, usually about an hour. In one day I can write up to 5,000 words without breaking a sweat!
That is a really big change for me. Having a short goal to work towards, 1,000 words in 40 minutes makes achieving it really quick and painless. Then I can walk away and clear my head.
I used to sit in front of my blank page for hours and hours and maybe write a paragraph, thinking this was the only way to struggle through the work. Little did I know, I just needed to give myself permission to work hard then step away for a bit.

This historical fiction book is the first volume in an intriguing series suitable for younger readers.
It will appeal to both genders and a large age range.
For those who appreciate history, adventure, women's literature and even cozy mysteries.

Imogene Madeline (Emmy) Nation left home to avoid an arranged marriage and took a job as a typist for the police, not with any intentions of being an evolved woman or moving into police work. She struggled to survive, have enough to eat and a roof over her head.
She has no intentions of changing history or becoming a suffragette.
When offered a position going undercover, Emmy took it for the better pay and being able to afford boots without holes.

When she finds herself admiring the women of the WSPU she finds herself in a position of making choices which no matter one she chooses  can not be right.
Which of her values weighs more than others?
From her experiences her thoughts begin to change. Are illegal actions ever justified?

With heartbreaking realism, the author writes an enthralling story of secrets, lies, danger and betrayals. With wonderfully developed characters, you will find yourself cheering  Emmy on, often while holding your breath. Unless we learn our history we can not appreciate all the rights, benefits and blessings we enjoy today.

Like me, you will be eager to learn what happens next.

“You’re not getting away so easily.” I ran after him, grabbing his shoulder and
spinning him around. “You’re the most confusing man I’ve ever met.
One moment you’re cold as stone—pretending that I don’t exist—and the next moment you’re on one knee, and it looks like you’re ready to propose to me. Listen, I don’t need a boyfriend, but I do need some answers!”

“I will only do so if you require it of me,” Daemon said as he turned back into the cold soldier boy. “But please don’t require me to explain, I beg of you. It is still too painful for me.”

“No deal, big boy. If you’re tough enough to pull an arrow out of your chest and
heal yourself from a sword fight, I think you are strong enough to talk to your best friend and explain things. So talk. I require it…and no more kissing my hand!” I said with great determination.

To my surprise, Daemon slowly unbuttoned his shirt and took it off.
My jaw dropped to the ground, not because I was looking at his perfectly chiseled chest of course, but because I just never knew what to expect from this man. He slowly turned around and showed me two long scars on his back that looked like a letter V.
He slowly turned back to face me. “Cailyssa, didn’t you ever think that it’s a bit odd that we have the same birthday?” Daemon said this as if he expected an answer.

“No, I just figured it was a coincidence, and it was always kind of cool to
celebrate my birthday with my best friend. What’s the big deal, anyway?” I said as I awaited more information.

“Although it is a vague memory in my mind, my life before I was born into your
world was filled with great sadness. I did something horrible, something that is
unforgivable,” Daemon said.

“What do you mean your life before you were born—like when you were in your mother’s belly or something?” I was perplexed.

“I don’t have a mother, Cailyssa, only humans do,” Daemon said earnestly.

My specular skills started to tingle, and I started to see some images in my mind.
They were beautiful but very frightening to me. I blurted, “What do you mean? You’re not human? Are you some kind of alien or something?” I tried to say this as I laughed confidently, but I was scared of what I would find out.

I focused on the inside of my mind and tried to organize the various images that
floated by. I captured one of Daemon as he was before he was born into my world. My jaw hung open, and I tried to form the words but I had great difficulty doing so.

“You’re an, an, an…angel?” I asked in disbelief.

I’m John Calicchia and I write stories of fantasy, action and adventure. In the fall of 2015 my book Mirror World was released! It's a story of two powerful young sisters and their epic battle against evil. But, this book has something in it most do not: hidden secrets.
It's a teen and young adult fiction book with a self-help book hidden inside. You see… after publishing in psychology books and journals for decades I felt my writing was not helping the young people I love to work with. So, I took famous psychology studies and put it in the characters and plot in Mirror World.
As you become part of the story you can learn about psychology or you can just enjoy the story!

I was happy and excited to return to South Cove, California and visit Coffee Books and More once again. This small tourist haven and its colorful residents grows on you easily.
Close friends Jill and Amy are trying to find fresh activities for double dates. Geocaching is new to them. Amy's boyfriend, Justin, finds it exciting but Greg feels he follows enough clues on his job as a detective. Speaking of boyfriends, or relationships in general, they all seem to be in turmoil in this story. Which one is so misaligned it leads to murder?

The food truck that was in high demand in the previous book in this series has now been outfitted to provide specialized gluten free foods and is owned by the long estranged wife of local hippy surfer Dustin Austin. Was the food truck incentive enough for her to reconcile this mismatched couple? We'll never really know as wife, Kacey, dies before the business gets its first customer.
Of course, the spouse is always the first suspect. Or could it be a woman he was well acquainted with during his separation? Someone whose recipes were stolen or someone who felt she should have gotten the food truck?

Kacey's death investigation had more deadend clues than the geocaching club she was president of.
The writing in this series has a comfortable flow. I appreciate the clever phrasing.
Even if you have not read every previous book in the series you'll understand and appreciate lines such as "of course, finding a real dead body (at a murder mystery dinner) hadn't been in the plan..." Or "Why do the crazies always find you to play with?"
The one that made me smile most was the last question of the book.

It wasn't overly difficult to figure out who-dunnit but there were enough questions raised that it could have been someone unexpected. The enjoyment in the book is in all the twisted relationships.
Some of those conflicts may carry over. Which means I can look forward to visiting again.

Meet the Author

Lynn Cahoon
I love happy endings. My stories are all about life in small town America and building the family that you deserve. You know, the people who love you unconditionally – even when you’re less than perfect.

Personal stuff? I’m a seven-year breast cancer survivor. I’m married to my own hero who shaved his shoulder length hair when I lost mine during chemo. I’m the proud mom of a computer engineer (although I don’t know what that means.) And I have four fur babies.

I’m an active member of MORWA, my local RWA chapter.

My debut was THE BULL RIDER’S BROTHER released June 4th, 2012 from Crimson Romance. Cowboys aren’t easy to love—but they sure are easy on the eyes. I bet you’ve felt the same way my heroine Lizzie has, at least once or twice. Since that time, THE BULL RIDER’S MANAGER, came to your favorite digital store. If flying was hell, waiting to fly was purgatory. Both are available in print as well as digital. And the long awaited bull rider story is finally out and available. Check out THE BULL RIDER’S KEEPER!

For those of you who like a little magic in your stories — The Council Series starts with A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL. A rogue hunter, a clueless witch and a mission to save an unknowing world. The second book, RETURN OF THE FAE, continues Parris and Ty’s adventures, and is a 2014 RONE finalist.

2013 brought MARRIAGE NOT INCLUDED, a organic farmer’s daughter meets corporate seed executive. Set in Idaho, this story takes me home.

2014 sees more big news – e-Kensington released The Tourist Trap Series – with GUIDEBOOK TO MURDER kicking the fun off in April. MISSION TO MURDER arrived July 31st, and a third book, IF THE SHOE KILLS, November 10th. Set in a small coastal California town, I love these who dun it’s with a touch of romance.

Summer of 2015 – DRESSED TO KILL and KILLER RUN will be arriving.

I’ve come a long way from the little girl on the school bus who used to cut out pictures from Teen Beat to illustrate my tales of love and loss. And yet, not so far.

So pull up a chair, pour a cup of coffee, and let’s chat about writing, love, life, and the pesky things that get in the way of our goals and dreams.
I’m glad you found me.

Incarnational Wonder

About the Book

9781742845487_Cover_FrontTitle: Incarnational Wonder
Author: Danny Kinane
Genre: Religion / Spirituality
Incarnational Wonder, even though written in old age and through a bout of severe sickness, has been very revealing on a personal level. Its writing has brought me to a clarity, more than a conviction of mind, something deeper, of what it means to be a human being, at the heart of which is spirituality. Its main focus is to, initially, isolate spiritually and see it what it really is: the bedrock not only of personal reality, humanity, but indeed of all reality. This foundation is found not so much in sacred documents such as the Bible or the Quran or in churches dogmatic teachings but in the human spirit itself in its everyday dialogue through experience. Experience is at the heart of the book, an in-built director of where our lives are going – and why and how. Academic disciplines such as theology and biblical studies take a secondary role. Today’s spirituality is saying to us we must find meaning within ourselves, our own spirits, if we are to thrive in, and indeed survive, modern life.

Author Bio

I came to Australia as a migrant from Ireland in 1973 to teach high school; as it turned out in both Victoria and Queensland. After five rather demanding years I decided to return to a previous interest and concern and eventually became a priest in the Catholic Church in North Queensland. This became an interesting and varied experience over the next twenty years, especially as a priest in the North-west of the state, so different from the urban areas of the east coast in its spiritual needs. But the main message over those twenty years emerged clear and powerfully: religion was dying because its spiritual base was so inadequate. I eventually retired from the church to spend my twilight years living a more contemplative lifestyle in the southern Queensland bush. I also began to write. “Incarnational Wonder” is my fourth book.

This book is divided almost equally in half in discussion of spirituality and theology.
It is not a preachy discussion, rather a calm and confident exchange of ideas with a friendly resource.
The book contemplates the meaning of life and what happens after this experience.
Life is by definition an experience, a journey, a process, of extremes from joy to sorrow and back.
Which came first- spirituality or therology> How are they related? How are they different?
Can they coexist or which can survive without the other?
Why is life's meaning so mysterious? Why is it so difficult to understand what I am here to do?
In Chapter 5, the author states "The real me is a mystery, hidden in the greater mystery of reality itself." We are contemplating what it means to be human, to have this experience.
Let me suggest, if you do not take time to read this entire brief book, do not miss Chapter four!

I appreciated the quoted poems throughout this volume. We see how those who spread messages of theology and spirituality today are building on the works of many who came before.
While philosophical, this book is uplifting and inspirational. You will find yourself at times introspective which will lead to personal growth.

Don't get hung up on words. The lexicology will differ across ages and cultures. It should evolve within ones own life. As the book progresses there are abstract concepts discussed. How should they be defined? Should they be defined at all?

Another statement that resonated with me is that "even in the midst of painful moments...long-term there may be a hidden blessing here."

If you have ever wondered about the meaning of life or how to make more of your presence and experience, you will get much from this discussion.

Playing Catch, A Baseball Romance by Rachelle Ayala, Review

On the field and off the field, bartender Jeanine Jewell plays, collecting one-night stands like baseball cards. She doesn’t need a man, except to curl her toes and make her scream. She’s learned the hard way that the one who cares more is the one who gets hurt—and the last thing she can handle is getting hurt, or having anyone discover her shameful secret.

Scoring women is easy for catcher Kirk Kennedy—they don’t call him “Catch and Release” for nothing. He never goes back for a repeat performance. Being traded to a new city is an opportunity for new adventures—until he runs into Jeanine and she refuses to go home with him. Intrigued, Kirk is determined to catch the elusive blonde and keep her to himself. When he proposes a wingman to wingwoman friends without benefits relationship, he’s surprised she accepts.

The no benefits clause soon falls by the wayside when neither Jeanine or Kirk can resist their explosive chemistry together. But despite the sparks between the sheets, they both refuse to acknowledge they’re anything more than friends.

Everything changes when Kirk discovers his past is the one Jeanine is hiding from.

Trigger Warning: The heroine was sexually abused by her foster father and has flashbacks.

Available to buy from...

"A truly extraordinary story that fearlessly demonstrates the transforming power and the breathless wonder that love can bring to a life in need.” - Amber on Goodreads

"I couldn't put down this serious story about love overcoming all." - Chantel on Goodreads

This is a sports romance but so much more.
Kirk Kennedy has a lifelong dream of playing pro ball. As much as he believes he is also professional league with the ladies, he will not let a relationship interfere with his larger dream.
His screwed up childhood is also a great reason to avoid personal, intimate relationships.

Jeanine Jewell is a product of the foster care system. The dark, seedy side of the system.
Abandoned by her mother at only a couple months old, she grew up doing whatever she could to survive. This takes an unspeakable emotional toll.
She barely has a friend in life and the one she is closest to has complicated troubles of her own.
She also happens to be Jeanine's business partner.

A very complicated and emotionally tumultuous novel that will pull you in and keep you turning pages. It will put you through an emotional ringer.
When you think things may get worked out, everything gets so much worse!

“Do you have some kind of wrap or shawl you could wear with that dress?” Ty asked, wanting a moment to set things straight for the intruding asshole. “You might get cold later in such a little bitty dress.”
“Give me a minute and I’ll look for something,” Monica replied.
“Sure thing, Sugar.”
Evan scowled at the pet name.
Both men watched her departing ass. Hot damn that dress was about to give him a heart attack. “You’d best stop looking at her like that. And I better never see your hands on her again either,” Ty murmured with a smile.
“She’s way out of your league, cowboy.”
“Is she now?” Ty remarked, stretching his smile.
“Are you actually implying she dumped me for you?” Evan asked with a snort.
“Apparently she knows a good thing when she see’s it. You didn’t.” Ty shrugged. “Guess that means I win. You lose.”
“Who says the game’s over?” Evan replied. “I never lose, cowboy. I’ve got more money and more influence than you could ever imagine. I always get what I want.”
“Is that right, Evan?” Monica stood in the doorway, wrap around her shoulders and bag in hand. “Did I just interrupt some kind of pissing contest? If so, I can end it now.” She looked from one man to the other, and then added with a smile, “For the record, Evan, Ty’s is bigger.”
“You’re welcome, Ty,” Monica replied tightly as they exited the hotel.
“I know you meant well, but that was emasculating as hell.”
“For you or for him?” she asked with a laugh. “You came out the clear winner.”
“That’s not the point. I didn’t want or need your interference, Monica,” he grumbled. “I can handle arrogant assholes like that. Been doing it my whole life.”
“So what did you expect me to do? Stand there and let him insult you? The way you two were eyeballing each other, I was beginning to think I might see some blood.”
“I doubt it would have come to that,” he said.
“So it was all just ridiculous male posturing?”
“Pretty much,” he confessed.
“He really does have more money and influence than you, Ty,” Monica said. “He made Forbes Top 100 mogul list just last year. There’s no way you could ever top him in anything related to business, but you are in fact much better endowed. That shut him right down, didn’t it?”
“Sure did. He may never get it up again.” He signaled the limo. “I miss my damned truck.”
