A little boy makes his first kill—and he likes it. He is cunning, charming, and without remorse.

He is a sociopath.

As boy turns to man, what lies inside takes root. He will make a mark on Boston unlike any other, and FBI Special Agent Alex Troutt must figure out how to stop him.

But when she and her close-knit team move in closer, the stakes become much higher as the case takes on a more personal tone. It’s a frantic race to stop a manipulative killer before his web of deceit and destruction escalates into a blood bath of haunting proportions.

About the Author
A veteran of the corporate wars, former journalist, and true studier of human and social behavior, best-selling author John W. Mefford has been writing novels since he first entered the work force twenty-five years ago, although he never put words on paper until late 2009.

John writes novels full of intrigue, suspense, and thrills, but they also evoke an emotional connection with the characters.

When he’s not writing, he chases three kids around, slaves away in the yard, reads, takes in as many sports as time allows, watches all sorts of movies, and continues to make mental notes of people and societies across the land.

John lives in Frisco, Texas with his beautiful wife, three opinionated kids, and a feisty fat cat who rules the world.

Once you open a Mefford novel, prepare to become immersed in his world.
Alex Troutt has all the challenges of a working parent, balancing home and work time, perhaps more difficult when she is realistically on-call 24/7. Add in that Alex is now a single parent with two kids who still need supervision. She has the world's best housekeeper, but a good parent knows where and when only parental involvement will do. This is brought home extremely clearly in this book with daughter Erin.
Even single parents deserve a social (dare I say romantic) life. Alex is tentatively wading in those waters, but of course author Mefford has to complicate that as well. Not only is the man in question a colleague, but younger than Alex. Is there still stigma attached to that?

Alex prefers to work alone, perhaps due to her exceptionally strong character traits. This time she is partnered up with` a local officer, sometimes seen as beneath FBI level. Let me tell you, this remarkable partner holds her own. I hope we get to see her as a recurring character.
Like Alex, this temporary partner has some emotional control problems at times.
John W Mefford does an amazing job of developing each character well to satisfy his readers.
As for the character of the bad guy, WOW. We are allowed to see how his traits are formed and reinforced. He even earns some sympathy.

Compared to some of the gruesome scenes I have read in other Mefford novels, I actually found this one tamer. Horrifying, yet not as gut churning. The secondary deviant made me more uncomfortable than the murderer, perhaps because I believe there are more of those types around and I felt the threat more plausible. More likely because of the way Mefford portrayed them and gave the murderer more human depth.

This is an action filled thriller with layers and alternate viewpoints.
No one will will disappointed, even if they have not yet read the rest of this series.
I am betting you will want the rest if you have not read them.
