When a long-lost relative turns up on the run from his rum-running mob boss and soon dies in a freak accident in small-town Texas during Prohibition, only 23-year-old Wallie believes it was murder. Driven by her love for Sherlock Holmes tales, Wallie pursues the truth only to encounter flappers and floozies, Chicago thugs sent by Al Capone, and a crime lord of the sinful port city of Galveston. Indulged by her father the judge but urged by her prim aunt to be a proper lady, Wallie plays amateur sleuth while courted by two eligible suitors. Will she stay alive long enough to figure out which one is her true love?

STEVE BERRY, NY Times and #1 internationally bestselling author says, “Kay has a talent for place and character, smudging the line between right and wrong with a beguiling sophistication.  The whole thing crackles with tension and imagination."

Roaring Twenties and Prohibition, Boot-legging, the Mob, Murder and more!
Family secrets lead to eye opening, world changing events for Walter MacGregor, who happens to be a woman. Her mother died before Wallie had a chance to know her, so she has lived a very protective life under the watchful eye of her Judge father and strict aunts. She never knew she had an Uncle until he shows up, one day, setting emotions on edge and tongues wagging.

Wallie considers herself a Modern Girl, having had a job and now with designs on being a mystery writer. Will her sleuthing skills get her in over her head? Is it time for her to add the title of wife to her resume?

The characters are likable and developed. That doesn't mean there are no surprises, to the reader or to each other. I read this as a stand alone but find the author's style so appealing I will read other books in this series.
