Geared towards younger children who have friends in their present neighborhood, and are comfortable in their present routines and home, this book addresses how one may feel when told they are moving. Belongings are boxed up, they don't want to leave friends, are unsure about making new friends, but want to be brave.

Told with energetic imagination and bright, beautiful images, which themselves can initiate conversations, this book is comforting, both to child and parent.

Molly has her dog, which is a comfort, but when she meets Ollie she sees how much fun living in a new place can be.
Magical and lyrical, this book is both educational and fun.

What is Adventure?

Adventure is in the title of my book The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day. So, what is adventure?

Adventure is experiencing life. There are big adventures like visiting the Grand Canyon or whitewater rafting. Taking trips are great adventures. Adventure is doing new things, seeing new things, discovering new things. Once while on a trip to Stockholm, we went to old town. There was a building, with a tavern in a basement room that was built in the 1300s! When we went off the main path of old town, I found a little plant growing on the side of the building. Going off the beaten path is a good way to discover new things. Another time, while traveling up the east coast of Maine, we took a side trip to a little coastal town. There we visited a little local café that had the most amazing clam chowder!

Living somewhere off the typical path can be especially awesome…in that adventurous way. My family once bought a 100-year-old house. A typical two story with a kitchen off the back. It was originally built with no indoor plumbing, which meant no bathroom! There was, however, a bathroom built later off the side porch, but when we moved in, it could still only be accessed from outside. So, a flashlight was stationed by the door for nighttime visits to watch out for critters on the porch!

To experience adventure, sometimes you must go out of your comfort zone. When I was younger, I wanted to act in our local community theatre. I was so scared. But I did it anyway. As it turned out, I loved theatre! I went on to volunteer off stage and eventually became a paid full-time costume designer. So, my motto is Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone!

Adventure doesn’t always have to mean going somewhere; it is also learning something new. The world changes every day, so the adventure is to keep an open mind and learn something new every day. Children are good with absorbing new things. Like when they look at everything along a trail when walking. The flowers, the bugs, the sticks. Children can make a game out of anything!

My next adventure will be to write many Molly & Ollie books, seeing life through their eyes, and bringing fun and adventure to children. I also want to go on a road trip with my daughter; it doesn’t even matter to where. I want to learn something new every day. I want to finish my 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle, and I want to watch all the Oscar Nominated movies! There is so much to do, see, and learn. And so much life to experience!

Meet the Author:

The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day was inspired by Beale’s own experiences as a young child. Her father’s occupation required that her family move across the country every two years. Beale’s childhood was filled with adventures that captured her imagination in each new home. She continued her passion for adventure while raising her two daughters and working as a costume designer for local theaters. Now she is channeling her sense of fun and her youthful spirit into her children’s stories. Beale is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day, a Mom’s Choice Award winner, is the first book in the Molly & Ollie series.
