Tell us about your profession as a nurse. Did you ever imagine that you would be a writer as well?
This fall will mark 7 years for my nursing career, it’s hard to believe I’ve been working that long! I knew since high school that I wanted to be a nurse. The medical field always interested me and at one point I thought about becoming a doctor. However, I realized that what I really loved about working with patients was being able to have a lot of one on one time with them and do a lot of education about their health. As a nurse you definitely do more of these things, so it felt like the perfect fit. I knew right away that I wanted to work with children as well, and I started my career in the Pediatric ICU. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much, but I realized even more that the education portion of nursing was my passion. I began working in the Postpartum unit with moms and their new babies and now I can’t imagine doing anything else!
I never thought I would add the title of “children’s book author” to my resume but I’m so excited that I decided to pursue this as well! For most of my career I’ve worked night shift and I’ve always had coworkers who have expressed how upset their children can become when they leave for work at night. It’s heartbreaking! And it can be so hard to explain to some kids what their mom is doing and why they’re leaving at night. When I had my own son I worried that he might one day be upset when I leave for work too, and the idea for this book struck me. I initially looked for a book about a night shift nurse, but I was shocked to find that one didn’t already exist. So I got to combine a few of my passions to make this book come to life. My love for nursing, children, and teaching all got put in the packaging of a book!
Daddy does a fine job of caring for their son but does his best to explain what Mommy does at work.
She needs to care for other people but thinks of her little boy until she comes home again.
This beautifully illustrated book has a wonderful message. It has a calming rhyme.
The words are easy enough for young readers to master, and even younger listeners to understand.
I was delighted by the images, especially of the dog. My favorite was how, as dogs do, he takes full advantage of the bed at bedtime.
I also appreciated the inclusion of the clock in various pictures. There is much to see and discuss with children as you read this book.
Kristyn Boland lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, Tim, her son, Owen, and their dog, Bo. She graduated from East Carolina University College of Nursing in 2014. Kristyn started her career working in Pediatric Intensive Care and later moved to Postpartum Care, where she takes care of moms and their new babies in the hospital. When she returned to work after having her son, she wanted to find a book for her husband to read to her son at bedtime explaining where she was and why she went to work at night. When she couldn’t find one, she decided to write it herself!
