Professional foodie Samantha Barnes has a simple Christmas list: a quiet holiday at home with her dog and a certain handsome harbormaster; no embarrassing viral videos; and no finding dead bodies. Unfortunately, she’s got family visiting, she’s spending a lot of time in front of the camera, and she’s just stumbled over the lifeless body of the town’s Santa Claus.

Plus, Sam’s plans for Christmas Eve are getting complicated. There’s the great eggnog debate among her very opinionated guests. There’s the “all edible” Christmas tree to decorate. And there’s her Feast of the Five Fishes prepare. Nonetheless, Sam finds herself once again in the role of sleuth. She needs to find out who slayed this Santa—but can she pull off a perfect feast and nab a killer?

An Eggnog to Die For by Amy Pershing

My name is Samantha Barnes – Sam to my friends -- and I am, for better or worse (often worse), known locally as the Cape Cod Foodie. You may recognize me from a couple of super embarrassing YouTube videos, as, as six feet one and a half inches I’m pretty hard to miss.

Cape Cod Foodie probably describes me pretty accurately. I was born and raised in Fair Harbor, a small town on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod and I’ve been a foodie from forever. So after high school I took myself off to the CIA (not that CIA, the Culinary Institute of America) just a little north of New York City to learn how to be a chef. Once I graduated, I soon became known as Samantha Barnes, a rising star in the city’s food scene.

Until I married another, super-macho, chef.  At which point, I suddenly became known as Samantha Barnes the fallen star of a viral YouTube video (1.2 million very unwelcome hits) in which my hubby and I mix it up in a kind of chef fencing match.

So, out of a job and out of a marriage, it seemed like a no brainer to retreat home to the Cape when I inherited my Great Aunt Ida’s house in Fair Harbor. There my old friend Krista, the editor in chief of the local paper, the Cape Cod Clarion, had handed me a gig writing restaurant reviews and making the occasional Cape Cod Foodie video for the Clarion (you’d think I’d learn). On my first assignment -- in A Side of Murder-- I’d promptly found a dead body. I was convinced this was a murder, though the local constabulary disagreed.

But did that stop me from trying to find out whodunnit on my own? It did not.  Because here’s the thing: As a general rule I don’t think people should get away with killing other people.

You’d think in An Eggnog to Die For (it being the holidays and all), the sleuthing could be put on hold but you’d be wrong. I mean, what’s a girl to do when she just happens to stumble over the lifeless body of the town’s Santa Claus? (Thus engendering the viral “Santa Clause is dead” YouTube video.) So I’m determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, even though my holiday plans are definitely getting out of control. (I’m definitely losing the Great Eggnog

Debate.)
But can I pull off the perfect Christmas feast and find out who slayed this Santa?
About Amy Pershing

Amy Pershing, who spent every summer of her childhood on Cape Cod, was an editor, a restaurant reviewer and a journalist before leading employee communications at a global bank. A few years ago she waved goodbye to Wall Street to write full time. An Eggnog to Die For is the second of the Cape Cod Foodie mysteries featuring Samantha Barnes, a disgraced but resilient ex-chef who retreats home to Cape Cod where she finds herself juggling a new job as the local paper’s “Cape Cod Foodie,” a complicated love life, a posse of just-slightly-odd friends, a falling-down house, a ginormous puppy and a propensity for falling over dead bodies. Kirkus Reviews gave An Eggnog to Die For a starred review, saying, "A delightful sleuth, a complex mystery, and lovingly described cuisine: a winner for both foodies and mystery mavens." A Side of Murder, the first of the Cape Cod Foodie mysteries, which Elizabeth Gilbert called “the freshest, funniest mystery I have ever read,” was the first book in the series. The third, Murder Is No Picnic, will be published in May 2022.
